Trout

It's about 10 a.m., and my buddy and I have already been walking for more than two hours. The trail into the forest long gone, we lunge over slippery fallen logs and scramble up rock outcrops.
 

This past weekend I embarked on one of my favorite activities: fishing an unfamiliar stream for wild trout. And when there I made sure I was armed with a box full of great summertime flies, terrestrial patterns.

The mercury in the thermometer has swollen to nearly reach the 100-degree mark, and the sun is bearing down unmercifully as you stand by the river's edge. Your annual fly-fishing vacation is underway, but you're faced with high heat, mandatory stream closures by the state's fish department and uncooperative trout. The steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a very important member of the migratory species found from the East to West Coast and the Great Lakes.

Brown trout tend to grow bigger, live longer, and tolerate a wider range of habitat types than their cousins the brook trout or rainbow trout.
