Hot dogs are a staple food for camping with kids. Consider them king of the camping meats! They are easy to cook over a fire or on the gas grill like the BioLite CampStove Portable Grill or charcoal grill like the popular Lodge Logic Cast Iron Sportsman's Charcoal Grill and require no planning or prep ahead of time. But they also get boring quickly. If your camping crew is sick of a regular hot dog and bun combo, here are six great recipes for hot dogs that will bring them running.
Most of these recipes allow you to prepare some ingredients at home and bring them in a Ziploc bag making mealtime at your campsite much easier.
1. Grilled Peppers & Pulled Pork Hot Dogs
(Serves: 6-8)
Cooking a hot dog over the campfire is a tradition for most camping trips, but my family likes to liven up our hot dogs with all sorts of toppings. Our latest hot dog recipe creation with grilled peppers, pulled pork, and pico de gallo may just take the cake. Remember that you always have the option to prep the veggies, pico de gallo, and pulled pork ahead of time. If you’re cooking over a campfire, just oil up a cast iron pan and throw in your vegetables to saute on the grate while you cook your hot dogs over the campfire.
INGREDIENTS:
- 8 all beef hot dogs
- 8 hot dog buns
- ½ red pepper, sliced
- ½ yellow pepper, sliced
- 2 cups pulled pork
- Salsa, optional
- 1 tomato, chopped
- ½ onion, chopped
- 3 Tbsp. cilantro, chopped
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 1 jalapeno, chopped
- ½ tsp. garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
INSTRUCTIONS:
HOW TO PREPARE THE PICO DE GALLO
- In a bowl, combine tomato, onion, jalapeno pepper (to taste), cilantro and green onion.
- Season with garlic powder, salt and pepper.
- Stir until evenly distributed.
HOW TO PREPARE THE HOT DOGS
- Cook hot dogs either over the campfire or on the grill.
- Scoop about 2 tablespoons of the pulled pork onto the hot dog, cover with grilled peppers and pico de gallo. You can also add salsa if you would like.
2. Bulldog Hot Dog Recipe For Camping
(Serves: 6-8)
With only five ingredients, this super simple recipe will add a little flair to the traditional hot dog. We love to go camping, but as with most people, we don’t want to spend most of our weekends getting food ready when we could be relaxing and enjoying our time in the great outdoors. There isn’t a ton of prep work involved in this one, and everyone can dish up themselves and create the meal that works best for them.
INGREDIENTS:
- 8 hot dogs (preferably all beef)
- 8 hot dog buns
- 10 oz. creamy coleslaw
- 1 can chili with beans
- ¼ white onion, chopped
INSTRUCTIONS:
- On the camp stove or over the fire, use a saucepan to heat up the can of chili with beans.
- Fire up the grill, place hot dogs on grate, and cook for 5-8 minutes, turning a few times.
- Butter the hot dog buns and place interior side down on grate until lightly browned.
- Serve hot dogs in buns with a spoonful of chili with beans, coleslaw, and mustard.
3. Camping Cowboy Hot Dog Recipe
(Serves: 6-8)
This cowboy hot dog recipe is easy to make and prepare at the campsite. This recipe will be sure to liven up the plain old hot dog. Having the ability to make a quick but tasty meal goes a long way while out in the woods. If you are looking to do the least amount of food preparation when you are at your campsite, prepare the bacon ahead of time and keep it in the cooler. The camping cowboy hot dog goes well with baked beans and potato chips or foil packet potatoes.
INGREDIENTS:
- 8 hot dogs
- 8 hot dog buns
- 10 slices of bacon, cooked
- ¼ cup barbeque sauce
- ½ cup shredded cheese
- ½ cup fried onion stacks
INSTRUCTIONS:
- In a skillet or in the oven cook the bacon.
- Once cooked, crumble and place in a bowl or baggie.
- Grill hot dogs on grill or over campfire.
- Near the end of cooking place the buttered buns on grill to toast.
- Put hot dog in bun and spread with a portion of the barbeque sauce.
- Add bacon crumbles, fried onion stacks, and top with shredded cheese.
4. Cowboy Onion & Bacon Hot Dog
(Serves: 2-4)
Here you go! Easy to cook over a fire or on the grill and doesn’t require much planning or preparing ahead of time. If you are sick of a regular hot dog and bun combo here is a great hot dog camping recipe that will kick-start a great camping menu. This recipe even allows you to prepare some ingredients at home and bring them in a Ziploc bag, making meal-time at your campsite much easier.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 Tbsp. olive oil
- 1 large yellow onion, cut into half moons
- 4 all beef hot dogs
- 4 hot dog buns
- 6 Tbsp. mayonnaise
- 2 Tbsp. spicy brown mustard
- 4 Tbsp. barbeque sauce
- ½ cup shredded cheese
- 6 slices cooked bacon, crumbled (can cook ahead of time and put in Ziploc bag)
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium heat, add onion, and cook until deep golden and very tender, stirring frequently, about 20 minutes. If you want to do this at home, put the onions in an airtight container in your cooler to keep cold.
- Grill or cook hot dogs over the campfire until slightly charred all over, about 6 minutes, turning occasionally.
- Add buns and grill, turning frequently, until warmed and lightly charred, about 3 minutes.
- Spread buns with mayonnaise and drizzle with mustard and barbecue sauce.
- Set hot dogs in buns, sprinkle cheese on top, followed by caramelized onions and bacon.
5. Campfire Hot Dog Pups
(Serves: 6-8)
Are you serious? Hot dogs filled with cheese? Wait… and there’s bacon too? We’re in! This hot dog camping recipe is insanely easy to prepare at your campsite. You’ll have you’re whole crew begging for more after just a couple mouthwatering bites.
INGREDIENTS:
- 8 all beef hot dogs
- Sliced cheese, cut in strips
- 10 slices bacon, cut in half crosswise
- Toothpicks
- 8 hot dog buns
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Split hot dogs lengthwise, not cutting through, and fill with strips of cheese.
- Wrap 2 strips of bacon around each hot dog and secure with toothpicks.
- Grill or cook over campfire, cheese side up.
- Remove toothpicks.
- Add buns and grill, turning frequently, until warmed and lightly charred, about 3 minutes.
6. Chili Cheese Frito Dogs
(Serves: 6-8)
Did someone say Fritos? We’ve been experimenting with the tried and true favorites, but adding a twist. Take this Chili Cheese Frito Dog, it’s an easy camping meal and oh so tasty! Most everyone has had a chili cheese dog or coney dog in their lifetime, but just the addition of Frito’s chips gives this hot dog a whole new flair.
INGREDIENTS:
- 8 all beef hot dogs
- 8 hot dog buns
- 1 (15 oz.) can of chili with beans
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheese
- 1 ½ cups Frito chips, crushed
- Jalapeno slices
INSTRUCTIONS:
- In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat cook the chili until heated through, keeping it warm.
- Lightly grease the grill grates of an outdoor grill. Heat the grill to medium-high heat. Place hot dogs onto the grill and grill until they are slightly charred on the outside. Hot dogs can also be cooked over the campfire.
- Place hot dog buns onto the grill or campfire grate cut side down and grill until lightly toasted. Place hot dogs onto the buns. Top with chili, shredded cheese, pickled jalapeno slices, and crushed Frito chips.
