Unlike in summertime, water in the winter in deep lakes doesn’t always get colder as you fish deeper. Water is heaviest at 39.2º Fahrenheit and sinks. So if you can’t find fish in the colder upper levels, try dropping a bait down into the “warm” water right on the bottom.
Cold fronts turn fish off like a switch, but they can also go on a feeding binge just before the front hits. Watch the weather reports and be there when it happens.
There is one key to cold weather or wintertime fishing. Two words but one key – slow and deep. Just keep fishing deeper, and slower, until you find them.
Fish don’t hibernate in the winter so wrap up warm and get out there and go fishing.
