Summertime is fun time across most of the bass fishing world. Our favorite piscine foes are active and we can fling and sling a variety of lures at them to tempt them to play with us.
Since fun is the operative word for summer bassin', who better than Jimmy Houston to pester for his favorite lures to toss to rip the lips on a few bass this summer? Heck, this legend has been having fun chasing bass and bucks on tour nationally for 50 seasons. You know he's gotta be having fun to keep that going.
Pop the top for summer fun.
"I sure love fishing a topwater in the summer," said Houston. "There a variety of lures to use, but my favorite is a Rebel Pop-R. Just something about it. I've been using the different variations of the Pop-R for decades. It is so much fun and catch so many fish."
Houston uses a green Hi-Seas copolymer line in either 12 or 15-pound test for the majority of his topwater fishing.
Yep, you guessed it, a spinnerbait.
"I really like using a spinnerbait in the summer," said Houston. "I know a lot of people think of it as just a spring or fall lure. The summer water usually clears up making it less effective, but I like to use them. Heck, I just won $10,000 in a tournament using a spinnerbait when that lure wasn't supposed to be working."
Jimmy's spinnerbait of choice is made by Booyah. Line size is 17-pound Hi-Seas copolymer.
Ding ding ding. Next up, the Yum Dinger.
"Summer is a great season to use a weightless Yum Dinger," said Houston. "Either Texas rigged or Whacky. Usually weedless, but every so often I'll use it Whacky style, if the opportunity is there.
"I'll use a spinning rod and lighter line if the fish tend to be smaller. If I am fishing where the 5, 6, 7, 8-pounders live, then I'll use heavier casting gear.
"Either way, it is a great lure to toss in the summer months."
