With the right equipment, a kayak can be many things — a capable fishing platform, a vessel for remote camping trips, or simply a great way to enjoy a relaxing day outdoors. </p> <p> Getting the most out of your kayaking experience starts with the right gear. Below is an updated list of essential kayak gear to help you prepare for time on the water. </p> <img alt="aqua-blue Ascend D10 kayak" data-entity-type="image" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/article_images/aqua-blue%20ascend%20d10%20kayak.jpg" class="align-center" /><h2>Kayak Paddle</h2> <p> A paddle is the most basic piece of kayak gear. Without one, you will not get very far. </p> <p> When choosing a kayak paddle, look for one that is double-sided, lightweight, and durable. Many paddles feature feathered blades, which help reduce wind resistance and improve paddling efficiency. </p> <p> Higher-performance paddles are often made with lightweight materials such as fiberglass. Fiberglass shafts offer a good balance of weight, strength, and value. </p> <p> For paddling basics, safety tips, and paddle sport education, the <a href="https://americancanoe.org/smart-start/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> American Canoe Association Smart Start program </a> provides helpful resources for new and experienced paddlers. </p> <p>Here are a few popular kayak paddle options:</p> <h3> <a href="/p/ascend-tournament-black-tan-kayak-paddle"> Ascend Tournament Kayak Paddle </a> </h3> <p> A double-sided paddle with a fiberglass shaft and feathered blades. Includes drip rings and a notched lure recovery hook. </p> <h3> <a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/ascend-trek-blue-kayak-paddle"> Ascend Trek Kayak Paddle </a> </h3> <p> Combines performance and value with a rubber-coated aluminum shaft and fiberglass-reinforced nylon blades. </p> <h3> <a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/ascend-explore-kayak-paddle-for-youth"> Ascend Explore Youth Kayak Paddle </a> </h3> <p> Designed for kids, this smaller paddle helps younger paddlers control their kayak more easily. </p> <table align="center" class="comparrisontable" style="width:100%;"><tbody><tr><td> <img alt="kids standing next to kayaks on shore" data-entity-type="image" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/article_images/kids%20standing%20next%20to%20kayaks%20on%20shore.jpg" class="align-center" /></td> </tr><tr><td class="text-align-center"> <strong style="font-size:12px;"> Youth paddles offer the same basic performance as adult paddles in a smaller size. </strong> </td> </tr></tbody></table><h2>Life Jackets</h2> <p> Life jackets, also known as personal flotation devices (PFDs), are essential kayaking equipment. Wearing a properly fitted life jacket helps keep paddlers safe and comfortable on the water. </p> <p> Some life jackets include storage pockets for fishing gear. Others use low-profile designs that allow full freedom of movement while paddling. </p> <p> According to the <a href="https://www.uscgboating.org/recreational-boaters/life-jackets.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> U.S. Coast Guard </a>, wearing a life jacket is one of the most important steps paddlers can take to improve safety. </p> <h3> <a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-tournament-fishing-mesh-life-jacket"> Bass Pro Shops Tournament Fishing Mesh Life Jacket </a> </h3> <p> Designed for anglers who want quick access to frequently used tackle while on the water. </p> <h3> <a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/ascend-universal-paddle-life-jacket-101639666"> Ascend Universal Paddle Life Jacket </a> </h3> <p> Highly adjustable with ventilated padding and reflective accents for visibility. </p> <table align="center" style="width:100%;"><tbody><tr><td> <img alt="kayaker paddling with fishing gear across lake" data-entity-type="image" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/article_images/kayaker%20with%20fishing%20gear%20paddling%20across%20lake.jpg" class="align-center" /></td> </tr><tr><td class="text-align-center"> <strong style="font-size:12px;"> Low-profile inflatable life vests allow unrestricted movement while paddling. </strong> </td> </tr></tbody></table><h3> <a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-am33-all-clear-tracker-logo-inflatable-life-vest"> Bass Pro Shops USA AM33 Inflatable Life Vest </a> </h3> <p> A lightweight inflatable PFD that inflates automatically when submerged and is Coast Guard approved. </p> <h2>Storage and Storage Accessories</h2> <table align="center" class="comparrisontable" style="width:100%;"><tbody><tr><td> <img alt="packed kayak with dry bag and utility boxes" data-entity-type="image" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/article_images/packed%20kayak%20with%20ascend%20dry%20bag%20and%20utility%20boxes.jpg" class="align-center" /></td> </tr><tr><td class="text-align-center"> <strong style="font-size:12px;"> Crates, dry bags, and bungees help keep gear organized on the water. </strong> </td> </tr></tbody></table><p> Everything you bring on a kayak needs to be packed efficiently. Storage solutions help protect gear and keep important items within reach. </p> <p> Checking marine conditions before heading out is an important part of trip planning. The <a href="https://www.weather.gov/car/Marine_Ref" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> National Weather Service marine safety reference </a> explains common marine hazards and weather terms paddlers should understand. </p> <h3> <a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/ascend-heavy-duty-dry-bag"> Ascend Dry Bag </a> </h3> <p> Dry bags come in a variety of sizes and help keep clothing and equipment dry. Their flexible design allows efficient packing. </p> <h3> <a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/ascend-heavy-duty-angler-crate"> Ascend Heavy Duty Kayak Crate </a> </h3> <p> A durable crate that provides storage space and mounting points for accessories. </p> <h2>Cordage: Rope, Paracord, and Bungee Cords</h2> <p> Rope and cordage are useful for securing gear, tying off kayaks, and anchoring in place when needed. </p> <p> When choosing cordage, consider diameter, strength rating, length, and whether elastic tension is required for your setup. </p> <h3> <a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-paracord"> Paracord </a> </h3> <p> Paracord is strong, lightweight, and versatile. It works well for anchor lines, transport tie-downs, and general gear management. </p> <h2>Coolers for Your Kayak</h2> <p> Coolers are a common addition to kayaks for food, drinks, or bait. The right cooler depends on the size and layout of your kayak. </p> <p> Measure the area where you plan to place a cooler and compare it to the cooler’s footprint to ensure a proper fit. </p> <p> Soft-sided and backpack-style coolers are popular because they are lightweight and easy to store on a kayak. </p> <hr /><h2>Shop the Essentials</h2> <p> Get everything you need for kayaking at <a href="https://www.basspro.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> BassPro.com </a> or <a href="https://www.cabelas.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> Cabelas.com </a> — including kayaks, paddles, life jackets, dry bags, storage accessories, rope, anchors, and coolers. </p> <p> Prefer to shop in person? With an understanding of the landscape of options, you can confidently choose the right kayak for the way that you would like to use it.</p> <h2>Ascend Kayaks: American Made, Highest Quality</h2> <p>Before getting into vessel specifics, let’s talk about the benefits of choosing Ascend. Designs are informed by not only aesthetics, but stability and performance across models. In fact, every kayak produced meets Ascend’s quality control checklist—a document that follows each kayak through every step of the production process.</p> <p>Every offering in Ascend’s lineup is composed of high quality, specially derived materials and manufactured in accordance with exacting standards. This trademark attention to detail results in Ascend’s status as one of the only kayak brands on the market to be certified by the National Marine Manufacturers’ Association.</p> <p>After production, skilled American craftsmen and women finish each kayak. This process includes the addition of high-quality finishing hardware—handles, grommets, accessory rails, etc.— and stamping each kayak with its own serial number.</p> <p>Ascend’s commitment to quality, performance and consistency offers a number of benefits to kayak owners. No matter which model you choose, Ascend provides:</p> <ol><li><strong>A kayak that is proudly made in America.</strong></li> <li><strong>A kayak that is specially designed for its intended purpose—with stability, hull integrity and aesthetics built in.</strong> Ascend’s fishing kayaks make fishing easier. The one that is right for you will depend on where you fish, how you fish and your budget. Here’s a breakdown of what to look for in a fishing kayak.</p> <table align="center" border="1" bordercolor="#FFFFFF" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="table-layout: fixed ; width: 100%"><tbody><tr><td><img alt="two kayakers paddling down river with fishing gear" data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/article_images/two%20kayakers%20paddling%20down%20river%20with%20fishing%20gear.jpg" class="align-center" /></td> </tr><tr><td class="text-align-center"><strong><span style="font-size:12px;">Flared bow sections and wide transoms are central to fishing kayak design.</span></strong></td> </tr></tbody></table><h3>Stability and Performance</h3> <p>Central to the performance and fishability are vessel stability and ample gear storage. The fishing kayak’s focus on stability starts with design and vessel layout. Fishing kayaks are marked by wide transoms and flared bow sections. This design means that there is more surface area of the kayak touching the water, providing a wider and more stable base.</p> <p>The fishing kayak’s stable platform allows the kayaker to stand while casting and fighting fish. This not only greatly increases your casting range, but drastically expands your field of vision. Many Ascend fishing kayak models include nonskid foam deck matting that makes standing to cast more comfortable and less slippery. This stable, comfortable and nonskid platform provides a number of advantages to those who fish from an Ascend.</p> <table align="center" border="1" bordercolor="#FFFFFF" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="table-layout: fixed ; width: 100%"><tbody><tr><td><img alt="kayakers paddling in ascend 10t" data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/article_images/kayaker%20paddling%20in%20ascend%2010t.jpg" class="align-center" /></td> </tr><tr><td class="text-align-center"><strong><span style="font-size:12px;">Fishing kayaks are designed to allow you to bring (and store) everything you need for a day of fishing.</span></strong></td> </tr></tbody></table><h3>Keeping Your Hands Free and the Ability to Multitask</h3> <p>Another characteristic of the fishing kayak is the inclusion of design features that free up your hands and increase your ability to do multiple things at once. Rod holders, equipped with rod leash harnesses, allow the angler to not only pack multiple outfits, but to troll while paddling and to fish multiple lines. Many models also feature flush mounted paddle holders that keep your paddles in place while casting or rigging your lines.</p> <h3>Mounting Rails: Customizing Your Accessory Line Up</h3> <p>Accessory mounting rails situated forward of the seating area allow anglers to place fish finder screens, camera mounts, and other useful kayaking hardware. The placement of these rails and their overall function is designed specifically to make Ascend kayaks more fishable—enabling you to customize your accessory package to exactly suite your fishing style.</p> <h3>Gear Storage: The Ability to Bring What You Need</h3> <p>Fishing kayaks are also generally equipped with gear storage areas. Outfitted with flush mounted bungee cords, these gear areas can accommodate tackle boxes and dry bags. Many fishing kayaks also have cooler storage behind the seat and a dry storage compartment. Ascend makes a number of accessories design to improve kayak storage, including <a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/ascend-heavy-duty-angler-crate?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating|kayaking|kayakbuyersguide" target="_blank">heavy duty crates</a>, <a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/ascend-heavy-duty-round-bottom-dry-bag-172932-1?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating|kayaking|kayakbuyersguide" target="_blank">dry bags</a>, and <a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-soft-sided-cooler?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating|kayaking|kayakbuyersguide" target="_blank">small coolers</a>.</p> <h3>Tank Wells, Carrying Handles, Adjustable Seats and Other Features</h3> <p>Many fishing kayaks also include tank well systems that can be adjusted with scuppers. These tank wells can serve as live bait storage when full or added dry storage when closed.</p> <p>Carrying handles on the bow and stern are designed to make kayak transport and loading easy. Adding a <a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/ascend-canoekayak-cart?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating|kayaking|kayakbuyersguide">kayak cart</a> and an <a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/ascend-adjustable-kayak-canoe-wall-cradle?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating|kayaking|kayakbuyersguide" target="_blank">adjustable kayak wall cradle</a> can help complete your set up.</p> <p>Many Ascend fishing kayak models also feature removable seats. These removable seats are included with some kayak packages and sold separately. This person(s) will have your return time and know the routes you are taking. They will be responsible for contacting authorities if an emergency arises. If you do not personally know anyone in the area, leave a copy with the local marina or law enforcement agency. Upon returning from the trip, be <span jsslot="">courteous and </span>contact the person you left the float plan with so they know you have returned safely.</p> <h2>How do You Make a Float Plan?</h2> <p>Begin by making a list of important information to identify you, anyone on board or with you and your craft. Also critical is the route you are taking. There are several printable float plan templates online or you can make your own. Children’s life jacket sizes are by weight.  Adult life jackets are sized by chest size instead of weight.  Sizes of life jackets for adults range from XS to XXXL. It is important to note that life jackets designed for adults will not work for children.   </p> <p><strong>Determine Performance Level: </strong>Wearable life jackets divide into five buoyancy categories: 50, 70, 100, 150, and 275 Newtons, which is a metric measurement equivalent to pounds-force. The new system synchronizes the regulations between Canada and the United States. Choose the level of buoyancy for the type of activity. The higher the number, the more buoyant. The curved arrow indicates that it is likely or not likely to turn an unconscious wearer face-up in the water.  Be sure to check the label to ensure the life jacket is approved for your activity.</p> <p><strong>Use/ Activity Approval: </strong>This panel allows you to determine quickly the activity in which the life jacket is appropriate to participate in while wearing.</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-img align-right"><img alt="Life jacket old and new performance chart identifiers" data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" height="261" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/k2_images/life_jacket_performance_compare.jpg" width="475" /><figcaption><strong>Coast Guard Auxiliary Association, Inc</strong></figcaption></figure><p><strong>Check for Damage: </strong> Life jackets don’t have an expiration date, instead look for discoloration and visible damage to the jacket, mold, broken buckles or zipper.</p> <p><strong>Buckle and Zip: </strong>After putting on a life jacket, pull the straps, so the life jacket is snug, yet comfortable.</p> <p><strong>Ensure Proper Fit: </strong>To check for proper fit, lift the shoulders of the life jacket to make sure it does not slip over the chin of a child.</p> <p><strong>Wear It:</strong> A life jacket only works if you have it on, and you never know when you are going to need it.</p> <h2>Float Trip Gear &amp; Essentials Packing</h2> <p><a href="https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-files/Misc/float_trip_checklist-min.pdf" target="_blank" title="Printable float trip checklist"><img alt="Float checklist checklist" data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" height="83" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/k2_images/check-list_float_tripbanner.jpg" width="339" class="align-left" /></a>Planning also includes packing the proper gear for the trip. <span class="st">Your packing list will vary by the time of year, where you're floating, and<em> </em>the reason your going.</span>For a short day trip, here is a handy <strong><a href="https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-files/Misc/float_trip_checklist-min.pdf" target="_blank" title="Print float trip packing checklist">float trip packing checklist to print out</a></strong>.</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-img align-right"><a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/ascend-10t-sit-on-top-kayak-with-enhanced-seating-system?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_basic-guide-to-kayaking-for-beginners-video" target="_blank" title="Shop Ascend 10T Sit-On-Top kayak at basspro.com"><img alt="Ascend 10T Sit-On-Top Kayak" data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" height="546" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/k2_images/kayak_sit-on-top_ascend10T.jpg" width="166" /></a> <figcaption><strong>Ascend 10T Sit-On-Top<br /> Kayak</strong></figcaption></figure> <h2>What Type of Kayak is Best for Beginners?</h2> <p>We recommend recreational <strong><a href="https://www.basspro.com/l/kayaks-canoes?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_basic-guide-to-kayaking-for-beginners-video" target="_blank" title="Shop kayaks at basspro.com">kayaks</a></strong> for beginners. Recreational kayaks are easiest to learn in. The American Kayak Association lists two main categories for kayaks; Flat water and Whitewater. And, there are five types of flat water kayaks; sit-on-top, recreational, touring, inflatable and pedaling kayaks. We will focus on the sit-on-top and sit-in kayaks.</p> <h3>Sit-on-top Kayak</h3> <ul><li>Primarily recreational boats for lakes and easy flowing rivers. An excellent choice for beginners as they are stable, easy to get in and out of, and with no feeling of confinement.</li> <li>They are comfortable when the air and water temperatures are warm, as you will get wet. They are self- bailing with scupper holes that allow the water to drain right out.</li> <li>Inside the hollow hull, they limited hard to access storage areas.</li> <li>They are typically heavier than comparable.</li> </ul><figure role="group" class="caption caption-img align-left"><a href="https://www.basspro.com/l/kayaks-canoes?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_basic-guide-to-kayaking-for-beginners-video" target="_blank" title="Find Ascend D10 Sit-In Red Kayak at basspro.com"><img alt="Ascend D10 Sit-In Red Kayak" data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" height="566" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/k2_images/kayak_sit-in_D10_ascend.jpg" width="175" /></a> <figcaption><strong>Ascend D10 Sit-In Red<br /> Kayak</strong></figcaption></figure> <p>The <strong><a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/ascend-10t-sit-on-top-kayak-with-enhanced-seating-system?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_basic-guide-to-kayaking-for-beginners-video" target="_blank" title="Shop Ascend 10T Sit-On_Top Kayak at basspro.com">Ascend 10T Sit-On_Top Kayak</a></strong> has a unique tunnel hull design for impressive maneuverability and a stable platform for standing or fishing. The design is optimized for accessory customization and unique storage opportunities. This Ascend kayak is the best choice for adventurers and anglers seeking performance and stability.</p> <h3>Sit-in kayaks</h3> <ul><li>They are the more traditional design.</li> <li>Due to protection from the wind and water, they remain comfortable when air and water temperatures are cold. Add a spray skirt for further protection.</li> <li>They offer more storage and recommended for longer trips.</li> <li>Their more narrow design makes them a little less stable.</li> <li>Tend to be more efficient to paddle due to a lower center of gravity.</li> <li>More storage capabilities.</li> <li>The position of your body and multiple points of contact inside the boat (butt, knees, and feet) will give you greater control, which is particularly useful in rough water and can also be more fun for maneuvering.</li> </ul><p>The <strong><a href="https://www.basspro.com/l/kayaks-canoes?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_basic-guide-to-kayaking-for-beginners-video" target="_blank" title="Shop Ascend D10 Sit-In Red Kayak at basspro.com">Ascend D10 Sit-In Kayak</a></strong> is designed to meet the needs of all kayakers, the D10 starts with an advanced tunnel hull design for maximum stability and ease of paddling. The large open cockpit gives you greater flexibility in cargo management as well as offering easy entry and exit at the shore with little restriction of movement out on the water. The Cooler Hold Down System in the stern cockpit allows for quick access and proper storage of a cooler up to 36 quarts in size.</p> <h3>Kayak Performance Types &amp; Terms to Know</h3> <p><strong>Hull Type- </strong>The hull is the shape of the bottom of the boat. It can make a difference in performance and the paddler’s stability on the water.</p> <p><strong>Primary stability </strong>(also known as initial stability) refers to how stable the kayak is when you’re first getting into the boat. Primary stability means you’re less likely to flip when you step into your kayak and sit down.</p> <p><strong>Secondary stability</strong> refers to how stable it is once you start paddling. Secondary stability means you’re less likely to roll over as you start moving through the water.</p> <h3>What Size of Kayak Works Best for You?</h3> <p>Recreation kayaks are 8 to 13 feet made for small lakes, rivers, creeks, and other calm flat waters.</p> <p>Touring Kayaks are 14-18 feet built to handle sizable rivers and lakes. Touring kayaks have more storage for longer trips and a thinner design to cut through the water faster.</p> <p>The width will determine stability and speed. The wider the kayak, the more stable and a bit slower. Overall, recreation kayaks have a wider hull than touring kayaks.</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-img align-center"><img alt="A basic guide to kayak size chart" data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" height="517" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/k2_images/basic_guide_kayak_sizes-EZ-Dock2.jpg" width="721" /><figcaption><strong>graphic credit ez-dock/blog</strong></figcaption></figure><h2><em>   </em>Types of Boat Hulls</h2> <img alt="kayak rounded chine hull shapes" data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" height="153" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/k2_images/hull_shape_round2.jpg" width="780" class="align-center" /><p><strong>Flat Hull: </strong>The flatter the hull, the more stable your kayak will be. Flat hull kayaks are ideal for recreational kayakers in glassy water conditions. Often the right choice for beginners.</p> <p><strong>Rounded Hull: </strong>The rounded edges of a kayak hull can increase speed and allow for less challenging travel through the water compared to a flat hull kayak. A rounded boat hull makes the kayak more maneuverable and offers more secondary stability.</p> <p><strong>V-Shaped: </strong>These hulls cut through the water and help the kayak travel in a straight line. They are ideal for touring or long-distance trips. They may feel a bit unstable at first since they provide the least amount of primary stability. However, v-shaped hulls offer better secondary stability.</p> <p><strong>Pontoon: </strong>This hull has a rounded bottom with an inward depression. They are known to be very stable because they combine the primary balance of flat hulls and secondary stability of rounded hulls. But they do tend to be slower.</p> <p><strong><img alt="Kayak chine hull shapes" data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" height="196" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/k2_images/hull_chine_shape.jpg" width="401" class="align-right" />Chine: </strong>The chine is the line where the boat’s bottom and sides join. The chine is either hard or soft. A hard chine means a more angular meeting of the hull edges, while a soft chine refers to a more rounded one.</p> <p><strong>Hard chines </strong>are known to track slightly better and offer better primary stability balance when entering the boat. Due to the flatter surface, they are more prone to tipping in rough water conditions.</p> <p><strong>Rounded chines </strong>are better at providing secondary stability balance and known to be generally faster. They offer a more predictable response when the bottom of the boat comes in contact with shallow river bottoms.</p> <h2>Learning the Parts of Your Kayak</h2> <p><img alt="Parts of a kayak" data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/k2_images/kayak_parts_ascend.jpg" class="align-left" />Understanding the different parts of your kayak and how they work is vital as you begin to learn kayaking skills, as it will allow you to understand the experts during the learning process.</p> <p>Kayak parts</p> <ul><li><strong>Bow -</strong> Front of the boat</li> <li><strong>Stern -</strong> Back of the boat</li> <li><strong>Seat - </strong>Like it says where you sit in the boat</li> <li><strong>Cockpit - </strong>Opening in the boat where the boater sits</li> <li><strong>Bungee cords -</strong> Storage area for cooler or other items you want to take. (see chart)</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-img align-left"><a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/ascend-trek-kayak-paddle?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_basic-guide-to-kayaking-for-beginners-video" target="_blank" title="Shop Ascend Trek Kayak Paddle at basspro.com"><img alt="Ascend Trek Kayak Paddle " data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" height="582" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/k2_images/paddle_trek_kayak_ascend.jpg" width="96" /></a> <figcaption><strong>Ascend Trek<br /> Kayak Paddle</strong></figcaption></figure> <p><strong>Materials and cost:</strong> Lightweight materials improve performance, but add to a paddle’s price. Aluminum paddles are cheap but also one of the heaviest. Plastic paddles are also inexpensive and popular with beginners. Fiberglass paddles are another good choice for lightweight and reasonability priced. Wood paddles are also lightweight, and the cost is low. Carbon Fiber paddles are lightweight but also more expensive and not as common. The material choice should always consider how often and how far you plan to kayak.</p> <p><strong>Blade choice: </strong>The paddle’s blade size and shape affect its overall efficiency in the water. The most common blade shapes are long and narrow or short and wide. The long - narrow shape is more comfortable for most kayakers. This shape is ideal for touring and recreational paddling. The short - wide blades scoop up a lot of water and provide a more powerful stroke.</p> <p><strong>Shaft choice: </strong>Many paddlers use straight shafts; however, if you have issues with your wrists, consider a bent shaft, which puts less strain on them. A bent shaft or ‘feathered paddle blades’ can also improve a paddle’s effectiveness and reducing wind resistance.</p> <p>Using the chart, you can take the kayaks width and the paddlers height to determine the recommended length of the paddle</p> <p><strong>Read: <a href="https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/kayaking/5354/how-pick-right-kayak-paddle-video" target="_blank" title="How to Pick the Right Kayak Paddle">How to Pick the Right Kayak Paddle</a></strong></p> <p>If possible, practice with your paddle before taking a long trip to confirm the perfect fit.</p> <h2>Understanding the Kayak Paddle Parts</h2> <p><strong><img alt="Paddle parts" data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" height="104" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/k2_images/paddle_parts.jpg" width="447" class="align-right" /></strong>Your paddle is the engine of your kayak and you're the energy that moves the engine. You want comfort while you’re on the move. You don’t want to be too hot, too cold, too wet, sunburned or windburned. You’ll want your clothes to be versatile and durable.</p> <p>Follow these general guidelines as you decide what to wear.</p> <p><strong>Dress for the water temperature </strong>and not the air temperature. While kayaking or participating in any paddlesport, you need to plan that you will get wet. In colder conditions, you may need a wet or dry suit.</p> <p><strong>Dress in layers,</strong> especially on top. The weather conditions may change along the route, so having layers you can remove or add is ideal.Avoid cotton because it absorbs water and stays wet; seek quick-drying fabrics like nylon, polyester, or synthetics. For the clothing layer that touches your skin, go with a wicking material.  Wool is also an excellent choice in cold water conditions; it dries less quickly but insulates when wet.</p> <p><strong>Wear comfortable clothes</strong> to allow you to move freely in and out of the water. Rugged fabrics that can stand up to the wear and tear of sand, water, and rough surfaces are a plus. Saltwater corrodes many metals, so sturdy plastics are a good alternative. Most metal components in paddling-specific gear are corrosion resistant.</p> <p><strong>Dress for sun protection.</strong> Regardless of cloud cover, a day on the water is a day of sun exposure. Taking a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen is essential. Wearing clothing with UPF-rated fabrics is a plus.</p> <h2>How Will You Transport the Kayak?</h2> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-img align-right"><a href="https://www.basspro.com/p/malone-paddle-gear-versarail-coated-steel-bare-roof-cross-rail-system?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_basic-guide-to-kayaking-for-beginners-video" target="_blank" title="Shop Malone Paddle Gear VersaRail Coated Steel Bare Roof Cross Rail System at basspro.com"><img alt="Malone Paddle Gear VersaRail Coated Steel Bare Roof Cross Rail System " data-entity-type="image" data-entity-uuid="0" height="231" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/k2_images/roof_rack_rail_system_malone.jpg" width="356" /></a> <figcaption><strong>Malone Paddle Gear VersaRail Coated<br /> Steel Bare Roof Cross Rail System </strong></figcaption></figure> <p>Before purchasing a kayak an important thing to consider; how will you transport it. It is possible to carry most kayaks on any vehicle. If you have a pickup truck, carry it in the back securing it with tie downs. If a pickup is not available, a roof rack system or kayak trailer are other options.</p> <h2>Sunglasses Can Change How You See the Outdoor</h2> <p><strong><a href="https://www.basspro.com/l/sunglasses?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_basic-guide-to-kayaking-for-beginners-video" target="_blank" title="Shop sunglasses at basspro.com">Premium sunglasses</a></strong> not only provide essential protection from the elements like sunlight, wind, and debris, but they can also greatly enhance your enjoyment of outdoor recreation.</p> <p>There is one feature on premium sunglasses that can dramatically improve your experience in water environments. When asked what the most popular float was, they were quick to mention Boswell to their resort.</p> <p>Watch video about preparing for your float trip in Missouri</p> <div class="video-embed-field-provider-youtube video-embed-field-responsive-video"><iframe width="854" height="480" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/FmRLElPPWV8?autoplay=0&amp;start=0&amp;rel=0"></iframe> </div> <p> </p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-region field--type-list-string field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Region</div> <div class="field__item">United States</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/kayaking" hreflang="en">Kayaking</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/video" hreflang="en">Video</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/canoe" hreflang="en">Canoe</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/fishing" hreflang="en">Fishing</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/camping" hreflang="en">Camping</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 06 Sep 2019 23:48:23 +0000 Heath Wood 7946 at https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/news-tips/kayaking/7946/explore-3-best-scenic-float-trips-ozarks-video#comments Fly Fishing Personal Watercraft Buyer's Guide https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/news-tips/kayaking/26503/fly-fishing-personal-watercraft-buyers-guide <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Fly Fishing Personal Watercraft Buyer&#039;s Guide</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/images/news-tips/Fishcat_deluxe_float_tube_buyers_guide.jpg?itok=2tIrI2pA" width="480" height="320" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" class="image-style-large" /> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/mathew-brost" lang="" about="/user/mathew-brost" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" class="username">Mathew Brost</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Tue, 06/18/2019 - 13:34</span> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Category</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/term/news-tips/boating/kayaking" hreflang="en">Kayaking</a></div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=26503&amp;2=bookmark" token="2-kAFz0gMMAvIgFDqkezQ8CvX_vEXRCIIRpYZ8hXotI"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=26503" token="ZFVH5QkQfFeiK3Qn-p7w2RFs0yWmAffIm7gQkbvclWM"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Personal watercrafts are useful for a variety of situations. Fishing ponds or lakes from the shore can be frustrating, as it often seems that those rising fish are just beyond the reach of your fly. A float tube or pontoon boat is an easy solution. Wade fishing large blue-ribbon rivers can be next to impossible, but having a personal pontoon boat makes a drag-free dead drift through those hugely productive and low-pressured feeding lanes possible.</p> <p><u><strong><b>Float Tubes</b></strong></u><br /> <img align="right" alt="“pontoon" border="0" src="https://www.cabelas.com/assets/cms/img/additional_info/buyers_guides/floattube_300x198.jpg" width="300" />Float tubes are excellent tools when fishing still water. They use bladders that can be inflated and deflated in a matter of minutes. This makes them extremely convenient, as they can fit in any vehicle and don’t require the maintenance of a large haul-with-your-truck boat. Many float tubes compress to fit into a backpack, so you can carry them to high mountain lakes where driving in is not an option. They are stealthier than large boats and allow you to get closer to fish without spooking them. If you decide that a float tube is the right watercraft for you, be sure to purchase a pair of flippers to go with it, as this will make moving yourself across the water easier and more efficient.<br /> <br /> Float tubes come in an enclosed circular shape as well as U-boat and hydrodynamic designs. Enclosed tubes are often the least expensive and do fine in most situations. However, they float fairly low in the water, so traversing fisheries in them is more difficult.<br /> <br /> U-boats float higher. This means you have to push less mass through water, making moving around the lake easier. Most U-shaped models have a stabilizing bar, stripping apron or both to secure and enclose the open front, along with a strap that goes between your legs and keeps you secure.<br /> <br /> Hydrodynamic tubes float the highest and are the easiest to power through the water. Their V-shape cuts through water with ease. Just like U-boats, there is a stabilizing bar, stripping apron or both to secure and enclose the open front, along with a strap that goes between your legs and keeps you secure.<br /> <br /> <strong>All float tubes have a manufacturer’s recommended weight capacity. Be sure to check it before making a purchase.</strong></p> <p><u><strong><b>Pontoon Boats</b></strong></u><br /> Pontoon boats are highly versatile tools. They work in almost all situations float tubes do, and can be used to float anything from mythical blue-ribbon rivers to lazy bass ponds.<br /> <br /> <img align="left" alt="“pontoon" border="0" src="https://www.cabelas.com/assets/cms/img/additional_info/buyers_guides/pontoonboat_400x175.jpg" width="400" />A variety of boats are available. Trolling-motor capability, casting platforms, recliner comfort, powder-coated paint jobs, anchor systems, stripping aprons and cargo decks are all offered. Unlike float tubes, pontoons have metal frames, adding strength for swift travel, longer distances and moving water. The two frame types are aluminum and steel. Aluminum is typically the lighter, higher-quality frame. It is also more expensive, though.<br /> <br /> The most common source of power for pontoons is oars. If you are going to be fishing water that is gradient-free with few to no boulders or other obstacles, using a pontoon with clamp-down oarlocks will suit you well. However, if you plan on fishing swift water with obstacles, having a pontoon with yoke-style oarlocks is a must. Also, in moving water with a gradient, having a pontoon 8 ft. or longer will help keep you safe.<br /> <br /> While pontoons all have the same basic design, they vary greatly when it comes to construction and extras. Some are made from PVC, while others employ a Cordura® construction. PVC is more durable, resisting punctures from unseen obstacles. PVC is also UV-resistant, so it is less likely to weaken with exposure to the sun. However, if you aren’t going to be visiting treacherous water, Cordura® nylon is less expensive and works just fine.<br /> <br /> Below is a list of things to consider when pontoon shopping:<br /> • Motor mount<br /> • Overall weight<br /> • Assembled dimensions<br /> • Unassembled dimensions<br /> • On-board storage<br /> • Anchor system<br /> • Rear deck size<br /> • Oar length<br /> • Casting platform</p> </div> Tue, 18 Jun 2019 18:34:50 +0000 Mathew Brost 26503 at https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/news-tips/kayaking/26503/fly-fishing-personal-watercraft-buyers-guide#comments Paddle and Oar Buyer's Guide https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/news-tips/kayaking/25103/paddle-and-oar-buyers-guide <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Paddle and Oar Buyer&#039;s Guide</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/images/news-tips/kayak_paddle_oar_buyers_guide.jpeg?itok=gwQpOS-Q" width="480" height="320" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" class="image-style-large" /> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/mathew-brost" lang="" about="/user/mathew-brost" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" class="username">Mathew Brost</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Mon, 06/17/2019 - 11:03</span> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Category</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/term/news-tips/boating/kayaking" hreflang="en">Kayaking</a></div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=25103&amp;2=bookmark" token="hN7dPghlzH5g0irG1ROlXWwoyWFJm3IvKRpYdTWsgY0"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=25103" token="ZTJruzOmOECyemtwkgx5QkEzh2mTQ3uoAEaKPcoej78"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>You are captain of your own ship, guiding yourself down the paths of your own choosing — all the while using your arms as your guide. And your watercraft will never run out of gas unless you do, which is why it’s important to choose a paddle that works most intuitively with you to propel you forward.</p> <p>The advantages of canoeing and kayaking are numerous. For starters, you are a part of a solitude that’s so quieting, all you can hear are your own thoughts and the calming swoosh from paddling. You are captain of your own ship, guiding yourself down the paths of your own choosing - all the while using your arms as your guide. And your watercraft will never run out of gas unless you do, which is why it’s important to choose a paddle that works most intuitively with you to propel you forward.<br /> <br /> While a paddle’s fit is mostly a matter of personal preference, you should keep a few considerations in mind, like length, shaft material and blade shape, to help you determine the best fit. Listed below are important points to help narrow your paddle choices.<br /> <br /> Determining paddle length<br /> <br /> Kayak paddles<br /> Generally, the taller you are, the longer you’ll want the paddle to be. Conversely, if you are shorter, you’ll want a shorter paddle. Use the chart below as a general guide to determine the paddle length that best suits you. And remember to choose a paddle that’s long enough for you to extend beyond the cockpit so you don’t knock your knuckles against the hull as you paddle.<br /> &nbsp;</p> <table border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="400"> <tbody> <tr> <td align="left" valign="top" width="100"><strong>Kayak Width</strong></td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100"><strong>Under 23"</strong></td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100"><strong>24 - 28"</strong></td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100"><strong>29"+</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td align="left" height="10" valign="top" width="100"><strong>&nbsp;</strong></td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100"><strong>&nbsp;</strong></td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100"><strong>&nbsp;</strong></td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100"><strong>&nbsp;</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td align="left" valign="top" width="100"><strong>Paddler Height</strong></td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100">&nbsp;</td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100">&nbsp;</td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100">&nbsp;</td> </tr> <tr> <td align="left" valign="top" width="100"><strong>Under 5’5"</strong></td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100">210-220 cm</td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100">230 cm</td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100">230 - 240 cm</td> </tr> <tr> <td align="left" valign="top" width="100"><strong>5’5" - 5’11"</strong></td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100">220 cm</td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100">230 cm</td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100">230 - 240 cm</td> </tr> <tr> <td align="left" valign="top" width="100"><strong>6"+</strong></td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100">220-230 cm</td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100">230 - 240 cm</td> <td align="center" valign="top" width="100">240 cm</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p><br /> Canoe paddles<br /> The ideal way to determine the proper-fitting canoe paddle is to sit in the canoe and place a paddle throat-deep (where the blade and shaft meet) into the water. A proper fitting paddle will be at shoulder level when it’s in the water. A more convenient and simplistic measurement is to place the paddle’s blade on the ground in front of you while standing. It should reach up to your chin if you’ll be paddling in the bow (front end) and up to your eyes if you’ll be paddling from the stern (the rear).<br /> <br /> Don’t get shafted-<br /> Considerations when choosing from shaft materials<br /> There are a variety of shaft materials to choose from, each with their advantages and drawbacks. Wood, aluminum and carbon fiber composites are just a few of the materials to pick from.<br /> <br /> <img align="right" alt="" border="0" height="69" src="https://www.cabelas.com/assets/cms/img/additional_info/buyers_guides/piln_paddle_bg_150x69.jpg" width="150" /><br /> Wood<br /> The advantage of wood is that it flexes slightly and absorbs some of the shock. For you, that means less strain on your arm and shoulder. Wood also captures the water’s movement so you can "feel" your paddle strokes. It’s ability to retain heat better than its aluminum counterpart means greater hand warmth in cooler conditions. And aesthetically, wood appeals to the traditionalist for its beauty and its direct lineage to the birth of paddling. Wood’s downfall is its heavier weight. It’s something you may not notice right away, but the more strokes you take in a given day, the more you’ll notice the fatigue in your arm.<br /> <br /> <img align="right" alt="" border="0" height="70" src="https://www.cabelas.com/assets/cms/img/additional_info/buyers_guides/piln_paddle_bg_180x70.jpg" width="180" /><br /> Aluminum<br /> This material is relatively light and the least expensive of the three, which makes for an economical choice, especially for the paddler just starting out. It also maintains its strength over time. Aluminum’s downfall is that it may feel cold to the hands in cooler temperatures, a problem that’s easily overcome with neoprene gloves.<br /> <br /> <img align="right" alt="" border="0" height="70" src="https://www.cabelas.com/assets/cms/img/additional_info/buyers_guides/piln_paddle_bg_155x70.jpg" width="155" /><br /> Carbon fiber composite<br /> This material is among the lightest available on the market while retaining its strength, making it the ultimate choice in a strength-to weight ratio. Because it is so light, you’ll be able to handle a longer day’s paddle with less fatigue.<br /> <br /> Other shaft design considerations<br /> <br /> One piece or two?<br /> A one-piece paddle inherently has more overall strength than that of a two-piece. However, if cargo space and storage is an issue, a two-piece offers a good solution because it breaks down into a manageable size that fits easily inside a trunk.<br /> <br /> Two-piece paddles come in a variety of styles, like the push-button takedown model and the telescoping model. The takedown model has three click hole settings, which allows you to feather the blades (position them at angles) for easy slicing through the air with minimal resistance.<br /> <br /> <img align="left" alt="" border="0" height="114" src="https://www.cabelas.com/assets/cms/img/additional_info/buyers_guides/piln_paddle_bg_250x114.jpg" width="250" /><br /> A telescoping handle lets you set the desired length, so you decide if it’ll be shorter or longer. Just choose the length and twist it in place. This is an advantage if you’ll be using one paddle for a variety of boats, or if you have multiple-sized paddlers sharing the same paddle.<br /> <br /> Some paddles are designed specifically with the angler in mind and come with a measuring tape etched into the shaft, eliminating the need to carry excess equipment to your favorite watering hole.<br /> <br /> Crank shaft kayak paddle<br /> Crank shaft paddles have a bend in either side of the paddle to provide you with an ergonomic fit, reducing stress on vulnerable areas in the forearm and wrist. This is especially helpful for longer floats.<br /> <br /> Bent shaft canoe paddle<br /> The blade’s arc is positioned at an angle so the power of your forward thrust is maintained up through the latter part of the paddle stroke for a further drift.<br /> <br /> Getting a handle on hand grips and other accessories<br /> <br /> Kayak paddle grips<br /> Sometimes the paddle will come equipped with foam grips that mold to your hand for improved comfort, or you can purchase a neoprene grip add-on to help prevent slippage. Also, take note if the paddle comes with drip rings. They work by creating a barrier from water droplets that would otherwise crawl down your arm as you lift the paddle in the air. If drip rings don’t come with the paddle, you can always purchase them separately. Another useful accessory is a paddle leash to prevent a run-away paddle from floating downstream without you. Paddle holders are especially helpful for the angler because they free up hands while the angler manages their catch.<br /> <br /> Canoe paddle grips<br /> Canoe paddles come in a couple of handle shapes, most commonly being the T-grip, which offers the best lateral control and is easy to grasp, or the classic palm grip with a flattened design for a comfortable fit in your hand.<br /> <br /> Selecting from blade shapes-<br /> The skinny on wide, narrow, oval and square<br /> <br /> Wide or narrow?<br /> When considering blade shape, think about the areas you¿ll be navigating. A wide blade allows for more powerful bursts of energy and drives your canoe or kayak more quickly, but is more tiring in the long haul. Generally speaking, recreational kayakers use a narrower blade since it¿s easier to draw through the water and affords you more paddle strokes in a given day so you can cover more area.<br /> <br /> Oval or square?<br /> Oval blades come either asymmetrical or concave like a spoon, or can be squared off on the bottom. The spoon shape helps you maintain stability as you push through the water and the asymmetrical shape is similar to that of an airplane wing for smooth pulling through the water.<br /> <br /> Square-bottomed blades can handle more stress than oval-shaped paddles, an important consideration if you’ll be using it to leverage off of lake bottoms and rocky shores. Also, consider if the blade has a reinforced tip. This ensures greater protection from everyday wear and tear and adds years to the paddle’s life.</p> </div> Mon, 17 Jun 2019 16:03:11 +0000 Mathew Brost 25103 at https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/news-tips/kayaking/25103/paddle-and-oar-buyers-guide#comments Important Factors to Selecting Your Fishing Kayak https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/news-tips/kayaking/22465/important-factors-selecting-your-fishing-kayak <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Important Factors to Selecting Your Fishing Kayak</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/images/news-tips/kayker-%20paddle-water.jpg?itok=8qhXllMI" width="480" height="320" alt="Kayak angler paddling" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" class="image-style-large" /> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/bass-pro-shops-1source" lang="" about="/user/bass-pro-shops-1source" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" content="BassRG" class="username">Bass Pro Shops…</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Wed, 06/05/2019 - 09:40</span> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Category</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/term/news-tips/boating/kayaking" hreflang="en">Kayaking</a></div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=22465&amp;2=bookmark" token="FbwHNTgfFSVDH7GDGKpQvxVt15IPgCVWjha9bzj8sdw"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=22465" token="5HLzha1Hc_u3WXlg7O-suMaJ4hzcKbdSvRDU7-JH41Y"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><html><head></head><body><p>By Josh Workman, Cabela’s Pro Staff and Kayak Fishing Expert</p> <p>There are a lot of questions you should be asking yourself while <strong><a href="https://www.basspro.com/l/kayaks-canoes?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_important-factors-to-selecting-your-fishing-kayak" target="_blank" title="Shop kayaks &amp; canoes at basspro.com">selecting a kayak</a></strong>. What waters will you fish? Will you be taking extended paddling trips or only fishing the weekends? How much gear do you want to be able to take?</p> <h2>Picking a Kayak Length</h2> <p>The length of your kayak should be determined by the kinds of waters you will be fishing. Shorter, 10- to 12-foot kayaks are great for inland lakes, ponds and slow-moving rivers. If you plan to fish in the ocean or larger bodies of water, you will want to consider a 12-foot or longer kayak. This extra length will help when battling any waves that you may encounter while you are out on the water.</p> <p><strong>Tip: <a href="https://1source.basspro.com/news-tips/kayaking/18653/basic-guide-kayaking-beginners-video" target="_blank" title="Basic Guide to Kayaking for Beginners (video)">Read the Basic Guide to kayaking for Beginners</a></strong></p> <p>Longer kayaks will be faster than shorter kayaks and will also add additional stability. Shorter kayaks will be more agile than the longer kayaks. So, if you are planning on taking a long trip, you will probably want a longer kayak with more speed. However, if you are fishing in a fast-paced river with obstacles, you might prefer a shorter kayak.</p> <h2>Consider the Kayak's Stability</h2> <p>When it comes to stability, there are a few things to look at. The wider a kayak is, the more stability you will have. The width will also provide more room in the kayak, making a long day on the water more comfortable. Also, the type of hull the kayak has will play a big role in how stable the kayak is. If stability is a high priority, look for a kayak that has a dual or tri hull. This helps displace water, adds stability, and it keeps you dry and inside the kayak.</p> <h2>Does the Kayak Have Built-in Rigging &amp; Tackle Storage</h2> <p>Most modern fishing kayaks come with built-in storage, such as storage spaces with waterproof hatches, center consoles or front and rear deck spaces with gear-securing bungee cords. Many come with built-in rod holders to keep your extra rods handy. Many come with GearTracs or the ability to mount your own. With GearTracs, the kayak becomes customizable, letting you add gear ranging from extra rod holders to electronics to camera poles for your action camera.</p> <h2>What to Choose - Sit in or Sit on Kayak</h2> <p>There are two types, <strong><a href="https://www.basspro.com/l/kayaks-canoes?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_important-factors-to-selecting-your-fishing-kayak" target="_blank" title="Shop sit-on kayaks at basspro.com">sit-on-top kayaks</a></strong> and sit-in. <strong><a href="https://www.basspro.com/l/kayaks-canoes?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_important-factors-to-selecting-your-fishing-kayak" target="_blank" title="Shop sit-in kayaks at basspro.com">Sit-in kayaks</a></strong> keep your legs enclosed. While they do offer storage space, it is sometimes harder to access while in this style of kayak. Sit-in kayaks also do not offer the ability to stand and fish.</p> <h2>What Will be the Kayak's Propulsion?</h2> <p>There are three ways to propel a kayak through the water – paddling, pedaling or using an electric trolling motor. The traditional paddle is the most common form of propulsion.</p> <p>The second form, the pedal drive, allows you to move the kayak through the water using pedals almost like those you would find on a bicycle. These are connected to a propeller or fins beneath the boat. Paddling is very common, however, pedal kayaks are on the rise because they free up your hands for fishing.</p> <p>The third form of propulsion involves using a battery-powered trolling motor, just like one you would find on almost any fishing boat. Like the pedal drive, the trolling-motor option keeps your hands free so you can spend more time fishing. They also offer greater boat control.</p> <p>The paddle-propelled kayak is the most common and affordable type of fishing kayak. They come in sit-on and sit-in styles, in many different lengths and widths. From fishing small inland lakes to ocean fishing, there’s a model for almost any fishing application.</p> <p>Pedal kayaks are for the anglers who want to invest more up front and free up their hands for fishing. Pedal kayaks will also allow you to handle wind and fish structure easier than a paddle kayak.</p> <h2>Choosing a Kayak Paddle</h2> <p>When it comes to <strong><a href="https://www.basspro.com/l/paddles-oars?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_important-factors-to-selecting-your-fishing-kayak" target="_blank" title="Find kayak &amp; canoe paddles at basspro.com">kayak paddles</a></strong>, the same amount of thought and research that goes into finding the right kayak should also go into getting the right paddle. Generally, you will want a light paddle that you will be able to paddle with all day. You also want a strong paddle, as you might get into a situation where you will need to push off stumps or the ground to help you maneuver, and you don’t want that paddle to break.</p> <h2>The Kayak's Weight &amp; Material</h2> <p>Paddles are almost always made of lightweight materials like aluminum, carbon or strong plastics. You will want to choose the lightest paddle you can, especially if you plan to spend long periods of time on the water. The lighter the paddle – carbon being the lightest and most durable – the more you'll reduce fatigue and make the day more enjoyable on the water.</p> <h2>Kayak Paddle Length</h2> <p>The paddle you choose for your fishing kayak should be different than the one you choose for a recreational kayak. Most fishing kayaks are wider than recreational boats. Also, the seat in a fishing kayak is usually up higher than a regular kayak, and this places you farther away from the water. Both of these dimensions, wider sides and a higher seat, require you to choose a longer paddle in order to comfortably reach the water. Getting the right length will make your day on the water much more enjoyable.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </body></html></div> <div class="field field--name-field-region field--type-list-string field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Region</div> <div class="field__item">United States</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/kayak-fishing" hreflang="en">Kayak fishing</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/kayak-gear" hreflang="en">Kayak Gear</a></div> </div> </div> Wed, 05 Jun 2019 14:40:41 +0000 Bass Pro Shops 1Source 22465 at https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/news-tips/kayaking/22465/important-factors-selecting-your-fishing-kayak#comments You Can Make Fishing Easier on a Kayak With These DIY Tips (video) https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/news-tips/kayaking/7719/you-can-make-fishing-easier-kayak-with-these-diy-tips-video <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">You Can Make Fishing Easier on a Kayak With These DIY Tips (video)</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/images/news-tips/68904008f966ea86ffdacaa829261e3d.jpg?itok=UrUaWcBB" width="480" height="320" alt="Fish Easier on a Kayak With These DIY Tips" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" class="image-style-large" /> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/keith-jackson" lang="" about="/user/keith-jackson" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" class="username">Keith Jackson</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Wed, 03/13/2019 - 14:53</span> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Category</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/term/news-tips/boating/kayaking" hreflang="en">Kayaking</a></div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=7719&amp;2=bookmark" token="MWeqQEgnjCkhxWjbtl5W-PWdhr8qX7nlF8Lt6HaWVwM"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=7719" token="PsGoQ344ZveR1bxAgoDbVi-u3LjL9geysv_0kyOHD64"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>The <a title="Ascend 128T Sit-on-Top White/Black Kayak at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/ascend-128t-sit-on-top-white-black-kayak?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_you-can-make-fishing-easier-on-a-kayak-with-these-diy-tips-video" target="_blank">Ascend 128T sit-on-top kayak</a> is the flagship of the Ascend fleet, considering that it’s the longest and best equipped. The slightest breeze will move it, and something like reeling in a crankbait will turn the kayak toward the line of the retrieve. <br /><br /></p> <p>Of course, it’s the ease of movement that makes a kayak so much fun to paddle, but it’s a pain when you’re trying to fish a specific area.  There is a cure: a <a title="Kayak Anchor Trolley Kit at Bass Pro Shops" href="https://www.basspro.com/l/kayaks-canoes?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_you-can-make-fishing-easier-on-a-kayak-with-these-diy-tips-video" target="_blank">kayak anchor trolley</a>.<br /><br /></p> <p><strong>The trolley is simple:</strong> it is a pulley mounted on each end of the kayak, along with some guides, trolley ring, and rope. The rope makes a continuous loop through the fore and aft pulleys and comes together in the trolley ring.  The ring can move freely from pulley to pulley. <br /><br /></p> <p>Thread the anchor rope through the ring and then adjust the ring’s position to lock the kayak in place. That way the boat and the wind or current come into equilibrium making casting and fishing a lot easier.<br /><br /></p> <table style="border-collapse: separate; border-spacing: 5px; ; width: 300px;" align="right"><tbody><tr><td><a title="Kayak Anchor Trolley Kit at bassprocom" href="https://www.basspro.com/l/kayaks-canoes?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_you-can-make-fishing-easier-on-a-kayak-with-these-diy-tips-video"><img alt="anchor trolly kit2" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/anchor_trolly_kit2_4.jpg" height="197" width="300" data-entity-uuid="9bf990fe-a7cd-4f7d-a277-807a1ba9ff22" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" /></a></td> </tr><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a title="Kayak Anchor Trolley Kit at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/l/kayaks-canoes?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_you-can-make-fishing-easier-on-a-kayak-with-these-diy-tips-video" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><strong>Kayak Anchor Trolley Kit</strong></span></a></td> </tr></tbody></table><p>The neat thing is that the trolley can be used with a stakeout pole in shallow waters or a drift sock to slow the kayak’s drift in open water by adjusting the amount of line and the position of the trolley ring. <br /><br /></p> <p><strong><img style="margin: 2px; float: left;" alt="1 arrow point" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/1_arrow_point_1470.jpg" height="15" width="17" data-entity-uuid="50e5f73a-f8e1-4936-8400-9f3dbc0f5ae5" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" />Tip:</strong> <a title="Anchor Trolley System for Kayaking - Do I Need One?" href="/index.php/component/k2/81-kayaking/3821-anchor-trolley-system-for-kayaking-do-i-need-one" target="_blank">Anchor Trolley System for Kayaking - Do I Need One?</a></p> <h2>2. DIY Above Deck Kayak Tackle Storage is Much Easier</h2> <p>Another thing that makes any kayak, not just the 128T, a better fishing tool is tackle storage, and one of the easiest ways to get handy storage is to build a crate.  While this boat has plenty of below deck storage, it is much easier to grab a box or bag from a container.<br /><br /></p> <table style="border-collapse: separate; border-spacing: 5px; width: 350px;" align="left"><tbody><tr><td><img title="DIY Kayak crate with rod holders" alt="kayak crate rod holder" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/kayak_crate_rod_holder.jpg" height="146" width="350" data-entity-uuid="f2e75b65-6a36-4c44-b1fd-53735b114415" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" /></td> </tr><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: #808080;"><strong>While tackle crates originally were made from purloined plastic milk crates, they became popular enough to be readily available from a variety of stores. </strong></span></td> </tr></tbody></table><p>Building a DIY crate to fit your needs is relatively simple. One of the most used tackle storage additions to make is a set of PVC tubes to hold fishing rods—or you can buy a set of rod holders to bolt to the outside of the crate. By doing so on three sides (leaving the forward side without), you can store 9 or more rods rigged and ready for action.<br /><br /></p> <p>(Note: the <a title="Bass Pro Shops 3-Position Rod Rack " href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-3-position-rod-rack?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_you-can-make-fishing-easier-on-a-kayak-with-these-diy-tips-video" target="_blank">plastic fishing rod holders are available from Bass Pro Shops</a> if you search ‘kayak crates.’ You’ll also find Plano versions.)<br /><br /></p> <p>Another great addition is some holder for the anchor. If you use a folding anchor, then a large tube (PVC, plastic carton or whatever) lashed to one corner of the crate is a good fix.</p> <table style="border-collapse: separate; border-spacing: 5px; ; width: 200px;" align="right"><tbody><tr><td><a title="Bass Pro Shops 3-Position Rod Rack at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-3-position-rod-rack?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_you-can-make-fishing-easier-on-a-kayak-with-these-diy-tips-video" target="_blank"><img alt="rod holders BPS" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/rod_holders_BPS_0.jpg" height="173" width="200" data-entity-uuid="f63c8fcf-b590-4ba6-8b10-890e9d1063ed" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" /></a></td> </tr><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a title="Bass Pro Shops 3-Position Rod Rack at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-3-position-rod-rack?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_you-can-make-fishing-easier-on-a-kayak-with-these-diy-tips-video" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><strong>Bass Pro Shops 3-Position Rod Rack</strong></span></a></td> </tr></tbody></table><p> </p> <p>Next comes tackle, and this perhaps, is what the crate system does best. It holds a series of plastic utility boxes for lures, terminal tackle, or whatever fits the fishing situation.  Because the crate is open, all the boxes-- or bags-- are visible and easily reached.<br /><br /></p> <p>And if you like, throw your lunch in on top.<br /><br /></p> <table style="border-collapse: separate; border-spacing: 5px; width: 250px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" align="left"><tbody><tr><td><a title="Plano Kayak Soft Crate Tackle System at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/plano-kayak-soft-crate-100072068?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_you-can-make-fishing-easier-on-a-kayak-with-these-diy-tips-video" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><strong><img alt="kayak soft crate plano" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/kayak_soft_crate_plano.jpg" height="178" width="250" data-entity-uuid="87643e0c-654e-4934-b4d8-2a7978508918" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" /></strong></span></a></td> </tr><tr><td><a title="Plano Kayak Soft Crate Tackle System at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/plano-kayak-soft-crate-100072068?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_you-can-make-fishing-easier-on-a-kayak-with-these-diy-tips-video" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><strong>Plano Kayak Soft Crate Tackle System</strong></span></a></td> </tr></tbody></table><p>The crate system does a great job of making tackle accessible—you just turn around and reach for the box you want. It has two storage systems built for kayaks that are expansions of the crate theme. It’s also a good source for the plastic utility boxes.<br /><br /></p> <p>(As noted above: <a title="Plano Kayak Soft Crate Tackle System at Bass Pro Shops" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/plano-kayak-soft-crate-100072068?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_you-can-make-fishing-easier-on-a-kayak-with-these-diy-tips-video" target="_blank">Plano’s two kayak ‘crates‘ are available from Bass Pro Shops</a>.)</p> <h2>3. And dragging a lure behind the kayak—trolling-- is a great way to maximize fishing time.  <br /><br /></p> <p>However, the 128T isn’t set up to do that without a little help.  Rod holders make trolling easy.  Tracks for mounting rod holders and other accessories are standard on the Ascend 128T. A Must-Have Fish Finder</h2> <p>Finally, a fish finder sometimes called depth finder is one of the must-haves for fishing in lakes and reservoirs where it’s often necessary to know the depth of the water you’re fishing, not to mention the possibility of marking fish below the kayak. It’s a depth finder designed for ice fishing.<br /><br /></p> <p>The <a title=" Humminbird® ICE HELIX® 5 CHIRP GPS 2 Fishfinder at basspro.com" href="https://www.cabelas.com/product/fishing/ice-fishing/ice-fishing-electronics/pc/104793480/c/104735880/sc/110951280/hummingbird-helix-h-gps-g-fb/2958083.uts?slotId=0" target="_blank">Humminbird Ice Helix 5 Chirp GPS Fish Finder</a>  is new, and for someone who fishes from more than one boat, as I do, it’s perfect. Ice-fishing depth finders are made to be pick-up-and-move portable because ice anglers frequently change holes looking to find fish.  As a result, they’re self-contained with mount (stand), battery and charger, and transducer in a compact package<br /><br /></p> <p>Because of the portability, it’s easy to move the Humminbird from kayak to kayak or from kayak to small boat.  Also, as the Helix 7 Chirp is a top-line sonar, it will see duty in my big boat as well. The neat thing about this depth finder is that it comes with the cables and transducer for n open-water use as well as for ice fishing.<br /><br /></p> <p>While it’s possible to use the ice-fishing transducer from a kayak, I’ve opted to add a <a title=" Scotty Kayak/SUP Transducer Arm Mount for Post Mount with Gear-Head Adapter" href="https://www.basspro.com/l/kayaks-canoes?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_you-can-make-fishing-easier-on-a-kayak-with-these-diy-tips-video" target="_blank">Scotty Kayak/SUP track-mount transducer mount</a>. The base slides into the same track that holds a rod holder, and the adjustable arm holds the transducer firmly in position over the side.  And because of the range of adjustment, I can use the mount and arm in my small boat as well by merely adding a Scotty mounting track to the boat. This setup makes things incredibly simple.<br /><br /></p> <p>50 Campfires reviews the <a id="ascend">Ascend 128T</a> and H10 Kayaks: Best Fishing Kayaks. </p> <p><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MGAm1DBC9Oc" width="560" height="315" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture"></iframe></p> <p> </p> <p>Check out this video about how the Scotty Transducer Arm Mounts telescope from a compact 11.5 inches to 18 inches when fully extended and swivel 360 degrees.</p> <p> </p> <p><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KurSgfQIam0" width="560" height="315" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture"></iframe></p> <p>There is a lot to be said for the Ascend 128T as a fishing machine beyond the above. Or you could add the small Power-Pole system. <br /><br /></p> <p>The reality is that 128T is a great starting point for customization to make the best boat for an individual angler’s needs. <br /><br /></p> <p><strong> </strong></p> <p> </p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-region field--type-list-string field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Region</div> <div class="field__item">United States</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/canoe-fishing" hreflang="en">Canoe Fishing</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/kayak-fishing" hreflang="en">Kayak fishing</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/kayaking" hreflang="en">Kayaking</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/tags/video" hreflang="en">Video</a></div> </div> </div> Wed, 13 Mar 2019 19:53:45 +0000 Keith Jackson 7719 at https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/news-tips/kayaking/7719/you-can-make-fishing-easier-kayak-with-these-diy-tips-video#comments Kayakers, Are You Being Practical About Cold Weather Fishing? https://afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/news-tips/kayaking/7554/kayakers-are-you-being-practical-about-cold-weather-fishing <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Kayakers, Are You Being Practical About Cold Weather Fishing?</span> <div class="field field--name-field-image-media field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/images/news-tips/c8bc579716d220284dabf41e7ca6a091.jpg?itok=-jJ6jtMi" width="480" height="320" alt="News &amp; Tips: Kayakers, Are You Being Practical About Cold Weather Fishing?..." loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" class="image-style-large" /> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><a title="View user profile." href="/user/keith-jackson" lang="" about="/user/keith-jackson" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="" class="username">Keith Jackson</a></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Mon, 11/12/2018 - 11:31</span> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline clearfix"> <div class="field__label">Category</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/term/news-tips/boating/kayaking" hreflang="en">Kayaking</a></div> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="flag.link_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=7554&amp;2=bookmark" token="KySLEXtxMoXWtF2bxK24NceuZDoGtPmgEHFPcJTF8kk"></drupal-render-placeholder><drupal-render-placeholder callback="like_and_dislike.vote_builder:build" arguments="0=node&amp;1=7554" token="Rc97ZsLryGh0syfaklBT9BG04s4wHiqzhryoBcomsfQ"></drupal-render-placeholder> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>It might be tempting to think of <a title="Shop kayak, canoe and accessories at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/l/kayaks-canoes?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_kayakers-are-you-being-practical-about-cold-weather-fishing" target="_blank">kayaking or canoeing</a> as a spring-summer-fall activity, but as long as the cold water you <a title="Shop fishing gear at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/c/fishing?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_kayakers-are-you-being-practical-about-cold-weather-fishing" target="_blank">fish</a> isn’t hard—that is covered with a sheet of ice—then cold weather fishing can be a great time for kayakers.<br /><br /></p> <p>Think about it, there are fewer fishermen, no jet skis or wake boats, and the fish are still hungry.<br /><br /></p> <p>But there’s a problem—winter fishing has its downside: it is cold (unless you live waaaaay down South), and it can be wet, and because of that cold-and-wet thing, it can be uncomfortable and a bit hazardous.<br /><br /></p> <p><strong><img style="margin: 2px; float: left;" alt="1 arrow point" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/1_arrow_point_1185.jpg" height="15" width="17" data-entity-uuid="bc06cb87-10f5-462c-bdd5-db50cc01004f" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" />Tip:</strong> <a title="How to Survive a Fall Into Freezing Water" href="/index.php/component/k2/268-survival-info/3477-survive-a-fall-into-freezing-water" target="_blank">Survive a Fall Into Freezing Water<br /></a></p> <table style="border-collapse: separate; border-spacing: 5px; ; width: 300px;" align="right"><tbody><tr><td><a title="Cabela's E.C.W.C.S. Pile on too many clothes, and you sweat, and that is not a good thing as it leads to chills when you stop working. And even if you’re not too warm, your body perspires constantly, and that moisture stays in your clothes—most of the time.<br /><br /></p> <p>The ideal situation is for the clothing you wear to pass that moisture along to outer layers and eventually to the air.  As much as I don’t like to say it, synthetic fibers do the best job of allowing the moisture to pass through.  If you’re going to be active, then it’s imperative to shed your lucky tee shirt and go synthetic from the skin out.<br /><br /></p> <table style="border-collapse: separate; border-spacing: 5px; width: 300px;" align="left"><tbody><tr><td><a title="RedHead Microstretch Balaclava for Men at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/redhead-microstretch-balaclava-for-men?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_kayakers-are-you-being-practical-about-cold-weather-fishing" target="_blank"><img alt="balaclava mcro RHD" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/balaclava_mcro_RHD.jpg" height="217" width="300" data-entity-uuid="6d25d405-9dea-43e3-8e3c-773ae8f0fe0e" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" /></a></td> </tr><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><strong><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><a title=" RedHead Microstretch Balaclava for Men at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/redhead-microstretch-balaclava-for-men?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_kayakers-are-you-being-practical-about-cold-weather-fishing" target="_blank">RedHead Microstretch Balaclava</a></span></strong></td> </tr></tbody></table><p>Fortunately, synthetic-fiber base layers are as close as the nearest <a title="Request Bass Pro Shops catalog" href="https://content.basspro.com/content/catalogrequest/" target="_blank">Bass Pro catalog</a> or <a title="Shop men's, ladies or youth clothing for base layers" href="https://www.basspro.com/shop/en" target="_blank">BassPro.com</a>.  There are different weights to tailor your choice to the temperature and your activity level. One piece of advice, you can get by with a heavier weight top than you might normally wear if it has a zip that lets you vent excess heat and moisture. If it turns cool, zip it back up and save the heat.<br /><br /></p> <p>While I’ve been beating the plastic drum about synthetics and your body core, I’ll say that when you’re talking the upper reaches, it’s hard to beat wool for warmth. And buffalo wool is even better.<br /><br /></p> <p>But here’s a thought—keeping warm is more than wearing a wool or synthetic hat.  We’ve all heard that “10 percent” of our body heat can be lost through our head.  While that may be true, especially for those of us who are follically challenged, the neck area is just as important.<br /><br /></p> <table style="border-collapse: separate; border-spacing: 5px; width: 300px;" align="right"><tbody><tr><td><a title="RedHead Performance Gaiter for Men at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/redhead-performance-gaiter-for-men?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_kayakers-are-you-being-practical-about-cold-weather-fishing" target="_blank"><img alt="neck gaiter" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/neck_gaiter.jpg" height="214" width="300" data-entity-uuid="039505ad-6f85-493d-8d9c-bd23c4cacd61" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" /></a></td> </tr><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a title="RedHead Performance Gaiter for Men at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/redhead-performance-gaiter-for-men?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_kayakers-are-you-being-practical-about-cold-weather-fishing" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><strong>RedHead Performance Gaiter for Men</strong></span></a></td> </tr></tbody></table><p>Buff makes a merino wool gaiter that snugly fits around head this great heat-loss area and does a good job of keeping you warm.  But any kind of covering for the neck is good, especially if it is form fitting.  Balaclavas like the <a title=" RedHead Microstretch Balaclava for Men at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/redhead-microstretch-balaclava-for-men?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_kayakers-are-you-being-practical-about-cold-weather-fishing" target="_blank">RedHead Microstretch Balaclava at Bass Pro Shops</a> are another good option as well, and if they also hug the neck, even better.<br /><br /></p> <h2>Keep Moisture Out of Your Clothing While on the Water</h2> <p>Fishing out of a kayak can be a wet sport, which can be a problem in cold weather. Just as we want to move body moisture out of our clothing, we definitely want to keep exterior moisture out as well.  However, kayaks have the potential to be wet—from launch to landing. That’s especially true with sit-on kayaks where you are open to the weather and any incidental splashing.<br /><br /></p> <p><img style="margin: 5px; float: left;" title="Kayak fishing in cold weather" alt="kayak fishing winter" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/kayak_fishing_winter.jpg" height="178" width="300" data-entity-uuid="b607a6d2-f923-41e7-9db6-c41f3f8df778" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" />A sit-in kayak has the potential to keep your lower regions warmer and drier. Buy a paddle or spray skirt that closes the cockpit in a sit-in, and you will be covered from the waist down.<br /><br /></p> <p>But for those who fish out of a sit-on-top kayak, breathable, waterproof outerwear is the key to staying dry and warm.<br /><br /></p> <p>While a waterproof coat is not necessary until it starts raining or snowing, pants or bibs like the are a good solution for most of the wet stuff that comes in over the side from wave splash, drippy paddles, flopping fish and so on.<br /><br /></p> <table style="border-collapse: separate; border-spacing: 5px; ; width: 250px;" align="right"><tbody><tr><td><a title=" Cabela's Premium Zip Breathable Stocking-Foot Fishing Waders" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/cabelas-premium-zip-breathable-stocking-foot-fishing-waders-for-men?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_kayakers-are-you-being-practical-about-cold-weather-fishing" target="_blank"><img alt="cabelas stocking fish waders" src="//afd-production-eru2ractomp34-gjdjeybzcubvfrgz.z01.azurefd.net/sites/default/files/inline-images/cabelas_stocking_fish_waders.jpg" height="293" width="250" data-entity-uuid="5363a615-e0b6-49f8-9c97-59fb409e56f8" data-entity-type="file" loading="lazy" /></a></td> </tr><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><strong><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><a title="Cabela's Premium Zip Breathable Stocking-Foot Fishing Waders" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/cabelas-premium-zip-breathable-stocking-foot-fishing-waders-for-men?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_kayakers-are-you-being-practical-about-cold-weather-fishing" target="_blank">Cabela's Premium Zip Breathable Stocking-Foot Fishing Waders</a></span></strong></td> </tr></tbody></table><p>A lightweight set of bibs are all that is required until temperatures start to drop, then something like <a title="Bass Pro Shops 100MPH GORE-TEX Rain Bibs at basspro.com" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/bass-pro-shops-100mph-gore-tex-rain-bibs-for-men?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_kayakers-are-you-being-practical-about-cold-weather-fishing" target="_blank">Bass Pro Shops 100mph Gore-Tex rain bibs</a> are dry and warm because of the lining.  <br /><br /></p> <p>While we can guard against rain and splashes, perhaps the greatest potential for getting wet is at the launch.  Most of my kayaking is done in spots that are best called “primitive”, and that means that I usually have to wade to get the kayak in water deep enough to float when I board.<br /><br /></p> <p>In sandal season, that’s not an issue, but come cold weather, that means boots.  There is another option, however, and it’s one I like better.<br /><br /></p> <p>It may sound strange, but the best option I’ve found is breathable, stocking-foot waders like the <a title="Cabela's Premium Zip Breathable Stocking-Foot Fishing Waders" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/cabelas-premium-zip-breathable-stocking-foot-fishing-waders-for-men?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_kayakers-are-you-being-practical-about-cold-weather-fishing" target="_blank">Cabela's Premium Zip Breathable Stocking-Foot Fishing Waders</a> or <a title=" Caddis Deluxe Breathable Stocking-Foot Waders for Men" href="https://www.basspro.com/p/caddis-deluxe-breathable-stocking-foot-waders-for-men?cm_soc=onesource&amp;type=boating_kayaking_kayakers-are-you-being-practical-about-cold-weather-fishing" target="_blank">Caddis Deluxe Breathable Stocking-Foot Waders</a>.  I use them in place of rain pants/bibs and boots.  As the waders are designed to keep water out, they’re perfect. Foam-filled life jackets that are U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) approved can be used. Inflatable PDFs provide no protection from hypothermia.<br /><br /></p> <p><strong>CAUTION:</strong> As the air temperature decreases, so does the C02 pressure in an automaticlly inflatable PDF. Less C02 pressure means less buoyancy. Be sure to read the U.S. Coast Guard label before heading out on a day below 40 degrees.<br /><br /></p> <p>On the plus side, foam life jackets are warmer, which is a good thing when it’s cold. There are several designs that target kayak users, making them more comfortable than the usual run of foam live vests.<br /><br /></p> <p>One last point—it’s a good idea to keep a change of warm clothes in the truck for that time when you do get wet.<br /><br /></p> <p>While there are risks, certainly, they are few and limited.
