According to the Outdoor Industry Association participation report in 2018, 22.9 million Americans, or 7.6 percent of the U.S. population, took to rivers, streams, lakes, and oceans to participate in at least one paddling activity such as kayaking, canoes or paddle board.

Recreational canoeing was the original paddlesport activity, which allowed the entire family to enjoy the water together. Recreational kayaking continues to grow in popularity and seems to be replacing many Americans’ desires to canoe. Since 2013, paddleboarding has seen an increase in the participation of 1.5 million participants.

In this how-to program, we will focus on recreational kayaking and the equipment and supplies you will need to enjoy a great day on the water.

Focusing on the Basics of Kayaking

Plan ahead - Plan for the weather, pack for the trip length, research the location, etc. Discuss the route and pace with everyone going. Create a float plan. Read more on "What is a Float Plan".

Take a Course - The ACA National Paddlesports Instruction Program has courses on skill development, safety & rescue, kayaking and more. Boat-Ed.com has a comprehensive online paddlesport safety course approved by ACA. Or, seek out a local paddlesport training program in your area.

Know your Limits - Know your skill level and the skill level of everyone on the trip.

Learn how to Swim - If you don't know how to swim, you need to. Even with a life jacket, know how to tread water will make you more confident in the water and can save your life.

Take a Buddy - The outdoors is better with others, so take someone with you. Having a friend not only makes the adventure more fun but, in an emergency they could also save your life.

Always wear a properly fitted life jacket - Life Jackets will protect you if you capsize or fall out of the kayak.

Follow Paddlers Etiquette - While kayaking, you will encounter other boats, swimmers, and anglers. Prevent conflict among boaters by understanding natural habitat and water etiquette. What is a Float Plan?

As part of the float planning process, you should create a float plan and leave it with a person who will be remaining inland. This person(s) will have your return time and know the routes you are taking. They will be responsible for contacting authorities if an emergency arises. If you do not personally know anyone in the area, leave a copy with the local marina or law enforcement agency. Upon returning from the trip, be courteous and contact the person you left the float plan with so they know you have returned safely.

How do You Make a Float Plan?

Begin by making a list of important information to identify you, anyone on board or with you and your craft. Also critical is the route you are taking. There are several printable float plan templates online or you can make your own. Here's a printable float plan from NWorr.org.

As part of the float plan, you should always take a friend and make sure that you know your limits based on water conditions. Remember water conditions will completely change based on the water level. And, at times water passages can be impassable based on the water being too high, too low or too swift.

Steps to Follow When Purchasing a Life Jacket

There are several terms people use interchangeably to describe a personal floating device (PFD) such as life jacket, life vest and float coat. Life jackets come in a wide variety of shapes, colors and, sizes.

Check Label: Make sure your life jacket is U.S. Coast Guard approved.

Look at User Weight: Not all life jackets are equal, so check the label. Children’s life jacket sizes are by weight. Adult life jackets are sized by chest size instead of weight. Sizes of life jackets for adults range from XS to XXXL. It is important to note that life jackets designed for adults will not work for children.

Determine Performance Level: Wearable life jackets divide into five buoyancy categories: 50, 70, 100, 150, and 275 Newtons, which is a metric measurement equivalent to pounds-force. The new system synchronizes the regulations between Canada and the United States. Choose the level of buoyancy for the type of activity.The higher the number, the more buoyant. The curved arrow indicates that it is likely or not likely to turn an unconscious wearer face-up in the water. Be sure to check the label to ensure the life jacket is approved for your activity.

Use/ Activity Approval: This panel allows you to determine quickly the activity in which the life jacket is appropriate to participate in while wearing.

Check for Damage: Life jackets don’t have an expiration date, instead look for discoloration and visible damage to the jacket, mold, broken buckles or zipper.

Buckle and Zip: After putting on a life jacket, pull the straps, so the life jacket is snug, yet comfortable.

Ensure Proper Fit: To check for proper fit, lift the shoulders of the life jacket to make sure it does not slip over the chin of a child.

Wear It: A life jacket only works if you have it on, and you never know when you are going to need it.

What Type of Kayak is Best for Beginners?

We recommend recreational kayaks for beginners. Recreational kayaks are easiest to learn in. The American Kayak Association lists two main categories for kayaks; Flat water and Whitewater. And, there are five types of flat water kayaks; sit-on-top, recreational, touring, inflatable and pedaling kayaks. We will focus on the sit-on-top and sit-in kayaks.

Sit-on-top Kayak

Primarily recreational boats for lakes and easy flowing rivers. An excellent choice for beginners as they are stable, easy to get in and out of, and with no feeling of confinement.
They are comfortable when the air and water temperatures are warm, as you will get wet. They are self- bailing with scupper holes that allow the water to drain right out.
Inside the hollow hull, they limited hard to access storage areas.
They are typically heavier than comparable.

Kayak Performance Types & Terms to Know

Hull Type- The hull is the shape of the bottom of the boat. It can make a difference in performance and the paddler’s stability on the water.

Primary stability (also known as initial stability) refers to how stable the kayak is when you’re first getting into the boat. Primary stability means you’re less likely to flip when you step into your kayak and sit down.

Secondary stability refers to how stable it is once you start paddling. Secondary stability means you’re less likely to roll over as you start moving through the water.

What Size of Kayak Works Best for You?

Recreation kayaks are 8 to 13 feet made for small lakes, rivers, creeks, and other calm flat waters.

Touring Kayaks are 14-18 feet built to handle sizable rivers and lakes. Touring kayaks have more storage for longer trips and a thinner design to cut through the water faster.

The width will determine stability and speed. The wider the kayak, the more stable and a bit slower. Overall, recreation kayaks have a wider hull than touring kayaks.

Types of Boat Hulls

Flat Hull: The flatter the hull, the more stable your kayak will be. Flat hull kayaks are ideal for recreational kayakers in glassy water conditions. Often the right choice for beginners.

Rounded Hull: The rounded edges of a kayak hull can increase speed and allow for less challenging travel through the water compared to a flat hull kayak. A rounded boat hull makes the kayak more maneuverable and offers more secondary stability.

V-Shaped: These hulls cut through the water and help the kayak travel in a straight line. They are ideal for touring or long-distance trips. They may feel a bit unstable at first since they provide the least amount of primary stability. However, v-shaped hulls offer better secondary stability.

Pontoon: This hull has a rounded bottom with an inward depression. They are known to be very stable because they combine the primary balance of flat hulls and secondary stability of rounded hulls. But they do tend to be slower.

Chine: The chine is the line where the boat’s bottom and sides join. The chine is either hard or soft. A hard chine means a more angular meeting of the hull edges, while a soft chine refers to a more rounded one.

Hard chines are known to track slightly better and offer better primary stability balance when entering the boat. Due to the flatter surface, they are more prone to tipping in rough water conditions.

Rounded chines are better at providing secondary stability balance and known to be generally faster. They offer a more predictable response when the bottom of the boat comes in contact with shallow river bottoms.

Learning the Parts of Your Kayak

Understanding the different parts of your kayak and how they work is vital as you begin to learn kayaking skills, as it will allow you to understand the experts during the learning process.

Learn the Basics for Choosing a Paddle

When deciding on a kayak paddle, you need to consider these four basic points:

Length: Your boat width and height determine the length of your kayak paddle. (see chart)

Materials and cost: Lightweight materials improve performance, but add to a paddle’s price. Aluminum paddles are cheap but also one of the heaviest. Plastic paddles are also inexpensive and popular with beginners. Fiberglass paddles are another good choice for lightweight and reasonability priced. Wood paddles are also lightweight, and the cost is low. Carbon Fiber paddles are lightweight but also more expensive and not as common. The material choice should always consider how often and how far you plan to kayak.

Blade choice: The paddle’s blade size and shape affect its overall efficiency in the water. The most common blade shapes are long and narrow or short and wide. The long - narrow shape is more comfortable for most kayakers. This shape is ideal for touring and recreational paddling. The short - wide blades scoop up a lot of water and provide a more powerful stroke.

Shaft choice: Many paddlers use straight shafts; however, if you have issues with your wrists, consider a bent shaft, which puts less strain on them. A bent shaft or ‘feathered paddle blades’ can also improve a paddle’s effectiveness and reducing wind resistance.

How to Dress for Kayaking

Clothing for kayaking is a lot like other outdoor activities. You want comfort while you’re on the move. You don’t want to be too hot, too cold, too wet, sunburned or windburned. You’ll want your clothes to be versatile and durable.

Follow these general guidelines as you decide what to wear.

Dress for the water temperature and not the air temperature. While kayaking or participating in any paddlesport, you need to plan that you will get wet. In colder conditions, you may need a wet or dry suit.

Dress in layers, especially on top. The weather conditions may change along the route, so having layers you can remove or add is ideal.Avoid cotton because it absorbs water and stays wet; seek quick-drying fabrics like nylon, polyester, or synthetics. For the clothing layer that touches your skin, go with a wicking material. Wool is also an excellent choice in cold water conditions; it dries less quickly but insulates when wet.

Wear comfortable clothes to allow you to move freely in and out of the water. Rugged fabrics that can stand up to the wear and tear of sand, water, and rough surfaces are a plus. Saltwater corrodes many metals, so sturdy plastics are a good alternative. Most metal components in paddling-specific gear are corrosion resistant.

Dress for sun protection. Regardless of cloud cover, a day on the water is a day of sun exposure. Taking a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen is essential. Wearing clothing with UPF-rated fabrics is a plus.

Before purchasing a kayak an important thing to consider; how will you transport it. It is possible to carry most kayaks on any vehicle. If you have a pickup truck, carry it in the back securing it with tie downs. If a pickup is not available, a roof rack system or kayak trailer are other options.

For many years, the rivers and streams of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas have been favorite destinations for river floaters in search of what mother nature has to offer. I have been fortunate to live near three amazing rivers in the Midwest. The Jacks Fork River and Current River in Missouri and the White River which travels into Missouri then back into Arkansas.

I was born and raised in an area within a day’s drive to float these rivers in canoes, kayaks, and tubes. Below is a list of the three most frequent float trips that people choose each summer to experience and enjoy the outdoors.

River Float #1 - Jacks Fork River at Alley Springs to the Eminence Bridge

Location - The Jacks Fork River is a tributary to the Current River, both located in southern Missouri. The Jacks Fork is one of the more scenic rivers in Missouri. The Ozark National Scenic Riverways protect it. As for this specific float trip, the starting point will be at Alley Springs, located a few miles west of Eminence, Missouri. The stopping point is at the Highway 19 bridge that is in the small town of Eminence.

Float Distance - 7 Miles, approximately 4-hour float

To-Do List - Before the floating begins, a popular attraction to see is the Alley Springs Mill. Within walking distance of the river access, which will be the starting point of this float trip, is the famous Alley Springs Mill. This magnificent 100-year-old grist mill sets next to the 10th largest spring in the state, that being Alley Springs. There are walking trails around the spring, an original one-room schoolhouse and a lot of beautiful scenery to view while walking through the park. While on the Jacks Fork River, floaters will enjoy tall rock bluffs, an abundance of wildlife and beautiful water throughout the entire trip hosting an array of smallmouth, bass, and goggle-eye, making for some great fishing along the way.

As for after the float trip, you could venture a few miles north of Eminence Missouri to the Echo Bluff State Park in hopes of seeing the famous Shannon County Wild Horses. The heard has approximately 35 horses, and the stories say the heard formed during the great depression when farmers freed many animals to survive on their own. Other areas famous for sighting the wild heard near Eminence is the Broadfoot Fields, Shawnee Fields and the two rivers on Missouri Highway V.

Tip: Get estimated float times here at the Ozark National Scenic Riverways (U.S. National Park Service). Always be aware of fast rising streams and possible river closures. Additionally, always call your river outfitter for the most up to date floating conditions. Be aware of river levels and weather in the float path and surrounding area.

River Outfitter - Windy's Canoe Rental in Eminence, MO. When asked what the most popular float trip on the Jacks Fork River is, Windy’s said: “hands down Alley Springs to the Eminence Bridge.” Floaters seem to always enjoy this float in Canoes, Kayaks, Tubes, and Rafts.

Float Trip #2 - Current River From Pin Oak Access Point to the Bridge in Van Buren, Missouri

Location - The Current River is the second river that makes up the Ozark National Scenic Riverway. This 184-mile river is the most spring-fed of all the Ozark rivers in Missouri. This beautiful river is in Dent, Shannon, Carter, and Ripley counties in Missouri.

As for this specific float trip, Pin Oak access point and will serve as a loading/unloading site only. It is located upriver approximately 9 miles northwest of Van Buren, MO. Van Buren is the county seat for Carter County and has a population close to 800 people and is where one will find the Highway 60 bridge that stretches over the Current River. Directly next to the bridge is The Landing, which is a resort that features lodging and a restaurant, as well as services for canoes, kayaks, tubes, and rafts.

Float Distance - 9 miles, approximately 6 hours

To-Do List - The spring-fed Current River is home to some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in Missouri. During this float, one will experience cool waters due to the many springs that feed into this river. This faster flowing, slightly deeper river also makes for a great scenic float. Floaters will enjoy an abundance of wildlife, possibly even catching a glimpse of the wild Elk that seen along the Current.

When finished with the float trip, you can travel four miles downriver, south to Big Springs State Park. This state park has one of the largest springs in the United States. The picturesque spring has an average daily flow of 286 million gallons of water. The park includes picnic areas, hiking trails and of course a lot of photo opportunities with the overflowing spring water.

River Float #3 - White River From Boswell to Anglers White River Resort

Location - The White River is a 722-mile river that flows through Arkansas and Missouri. On this float trip, we are close to the middle section of the river near Mountain View, Arkansas, which is the county seat for Stone County. The Anglers White River Resort is the boat takeout point of this particular float. It is located directly on the banks of the White River at the point where Sylamore Creek flows into the White River.

Float Distance – 7 miles, approximately 4 hours

To-Do List – Even though Mountain View is known as the Folk Music Capital Of The World, they are also known for the White River and its fishing. The White River has a lot of rainbow trout; however, it also has smallmouth and largemouth bass, which makes for a great time while floating. This portion of the White River is home to a lot of cool, clear water gently moving downstream. This float is one of the best float trips for a family or group of people that are in search of a scenic float.

After your float comes to an end, you can travel a short distance north of Mountain View to the Blanchard Springs Caverns. These caverns are three-levels. The cave can be viewed by guided tours which consist of many trails, such as one trail that is close to 1.2 miles long that winds through the cave.

Tip: Please plan your float trip by using a mile by mile float map provided by the National Scenic Riverways and use the estimated float times.

River Outfitter - Anglers Inn White River Resort in Mountain View, Arkansas. The Anglers Inn is also a perfect place for an ending point on a float down the White River. They have rooms to relax and a restaurant that offers a tremendous scenic dining experience, as well as providing canoes and kayaks for floating. Personal watercrafts are useful for a variety of situations. Fishing ponds or lakes from the shore can be frustrating, as it often seems that those rising fish are just beyond the reach of your fly. A float tube or pontoon boat is an easy solution. Wade fishing large blue-ribbon rivers can be next to impossible, but having a personal pontoon boat makes a drag-free dead drift through those hugely productive and low-pressured feeding lanes possible.

Float Tubes
Float tubes are excellent tools when fishing still water. They use bladders that can be inflated and deflated in a matter of minutes. This makes them extremely convenient, as they can fit in any vehicle and don’t require the maintenance of a large haul-with-your-truck boat. Many float tubes compress to fit into a backpack, so you can carry them to high mountain lakes where driving in is not an option. They are stealthier than large boats and allow you to get closer to fish without spooking them. If you decide that a float tube is the right watercraft for you, be sure to purchase a pair of flippers to go with it, as this will make moving yourself across the water easier and more efficient.

Float tubes come in an enclosed circular shape as well as U-boat and hydrodynamic designs. Enclosed tubes are often the least expensive and do fine in most situations. However, they float fairly low in the water, so traversing fisheries in them is more difficult.

U-boats float higher. This means you have to push less mass through water, making moving around the lake easier. Most U-shaped models have a stabilizing bar, stripping apron or both to secure and enclose the open front, along with a strap that goes between your legs and keeps you secure.

Hydrodynamic tubes float the highest and are the easiest to power through the water. Their V-shape cuts through water with ease. All float tubes have a manufacturer’s recommended weight capacity. Be sure to check it before making a purchase.

Pontoon Boats
Pontoon boats are highly versatile tools. They work in almost all situations float tubes do, and can be used to float anything from mythical blue-ribbon rivers to lazy bass ponds.

A variety of boats are available. Trolling-motor capability, casting platforms, recliner comfort, powder-coated paint jobs, anchor systems, stripping aprons and cargo decks are all offered. Unlike float tubes, pontoons have metal frames, adding strength for swift travel, longer distances and moving water. The two frame types are aluminum and steel. Aluminum is typically the lighter, higher-quality frame. It is also more expensive, though.

The most common source of power for pontoons is oars. If you are going to be fishing water that is gradient-free with few to no boulders or other obstacles, using a pontoon with clamp-down oarlocks will suit you well. However, if you plan on fishing swift water with obstacles, having a pontoon with yoke-style oarlocks is a must. Also, in moving water with a gradient, having a pontoon 8 ft. or longer will help keep you safe.

While pontoons all have the same basic design, they vary greatly when it comes to construction and extras. Some are made from PVC, while others employ a Cordura® construction. PVC is more durable, resisting punctures from unseen obstacles. PVC is also UV-resistant, so it is less likely to weaken with exposure to the sun. However, if you aren’t going to be visiting treacherous water, Cordura® nylon is less expensive and works just fine.

You are captain of your own ship, guiding yourself down the paths of your own choosing — all the while using your arms as your guide. And your watercraft will never run out of gas unless you do, which is why it’s important to choose a paddle that works most intuitively with you to propel you forward.

The advantages of canoeing and kayaking are numerous. For starters, you are a part of a solitude that’s so quieting, all you can hear are your own thoughts and the calming swoosh from paddling. You are captain of your own ship, guiding yourself down the paths of your own choosing - all the while using your arms as your guide. And your watercraft will never run out of gas unless you do, which is why it’s important to choose a paddle that works most intuitively with you to propel you forward.

While a paddle’s fit is mostly a matter of personal preference, you should keep a few considerations in mind, like length, shaft material and blade shape, to help you determine the best fit. Listed below are important points to help narrow your paddle choices.

Determining paddle length

Generally, the taller you are, the longer you’ll want the paddle to be. Conversely, if you are shorter, you’ll want a shorter paddle. Use the chart below as a general guide to determine the paddle length that best suits you. And remember to choose a paddle that’s long enough for you to extend beyond the cockpit so you don’t knock your knuckles against the hull as you paddle.

Canoe paddles
The ideal way to determine the proper-fitting canoe paddle is to sit in the canoe and place a paddle throat-deep (where the blade and shaft meet) into the water. A proper fitting paddle will be at shoulder level when it’s in the water. A more convenient and simplistic measurement is to place the paddle’s blade on the ground in front of you while standing. It should reach up to your chin if you’ll be paddling in the bow (front end) and up to your eyes if you’ll be paddling from the stern (the rear).

Don’t get shafted-
Considerations when choosing from shaft materials
There are a variety of shaft materials to choose from, each with their advantages and drawbacks. Wood, aluminum and carbon fiber composites are just a few of the materials to pick from.

Wood
The advantage of wood is that it flexes slightly and absorbs some of the shock. For you, that means less strain on your arm and shoulder. Wood also captures the water’s movement so you can "feel" your paddle strokes. It’s ability to retain heat better than its aluminum counterpart means greater hand warmth in cooler conditions. And aesthetically, wood appeals to the traditionalist for its beauty and its direct lineage to the birth of paddling. Wood’s downfall is its heavier weight. It’s something you may not notice right away, but the more strokes you take in a given day, the more you’ll notice the fatigue in your arm.

Aluminum
This material is relatively light and the least expensive of the three, which makes for an economical choice, especially for the paddler just starting out. It also maintains its strength over time. Aluminum’s downfall is that it may feel cold to the hands in cooler temperatures, a problem that’s easily overcome with neoprene gloves.

Carbon fiber composite
This material is among the lightest available on the market while retaining its strength, making it the ultimate choice in a strength-to weight ratio. Because it is so light, you’ll be able to handle a longer day’s paddle with less fatigue.

Other shaft design considerations

One piece or two?
A one-piece paddle inherently has more overall strength than that of a two-piece. However, if cargo space and storage is an issue, a two-piece offers a good solution because it breaks down into a manageable size that fits easily inside a trunk.

Two-piece paddles come in a variety of styles, like the push-button takedown model and the telescoping model. The takedown model has three click hole settings, which allows you to feather the blades (position them at angles) for easy slicing through the air with minimal resistance.

A telescoping handle lets you set the desired length, so you decide if it’ll be shorter or longer. Just choose the length and twist it in place. This is an advantage if you’ll be using one paddle for a variety of boats, or if you have multiple-sized paddlers sharing the same paddle.

Some paddles are designed specifically with the angler in mind and come with a measuring tape etched into the shaft, eliminating the need to carry excess equipment to your favorite watering hole.

Crank shaft paddles have a bend in either side of the paddle to provide you with an ergonomic fit, reducing stress on vulnerable areas in the forearm and wrist. This is especially helpful for longer floats.

The blade’s arc is positioned at an angle so the power of your forward thrust is maintained up through the latter part of the paddle stroke for a further drift.

Getting a handle on hand grips and other accessories

Sometimes the paddle will come equipped with foam grips that mold to your hand for improved comfort, or you can purchase a neoprene grip add-on to help prevent slippage. Also, take note if the paddle comes with drip rings. They work by creating a barrier from water droplets that would otherwise crawl down your arm as you lift the paddle in the air. If drip rings don’t come with the paddle, you can always purchase them separately. Another useful accessory is a paddle leash to prevent a run-away paddle from floating downstream without you. Paddle holders are especially helpful for the angler because they free up hands while the angler manages their catch.

Canoe paddle grips
Canoe paddles come in a couple of handle shapes, most commonly being the T-grip, which offers the best lateral control and is easy to grasp, or the classic palm grip with a flattened design for a comfortable fit in your hand.

Wide or narrow?
When considering blade shape, think about the areas you¿ll be navigating. A wide blade allows for more powerful bursts of energy and drives your canoe or kayak more quickly, but is more tiring in the long haul. Generally speaking, recreational kayakers use a narrower blade since it¿s easier to draw through the water and affords you more paddle strokes in a given day so you can cover more area.

Oval or square?
Oval blades come either asymmetrical or concave like a spoon, or can be squared off on the bottom. The spoon shape helps you maintain stability as you push through the water and the asymmetrical shape is similar to that of an airplane wing for smooth pulling through the water.

Square-bottomed blades can handle more stress than oval-shaped paddles, an important consideration if you’ll be using it to leverage off of lake bottoms and rocky shores. Also, consider if the blade has a reinforced tip. This ensures greater protection from everyday wear and tear and adds years to the paddle’s life.

Picking a Kayak Length

The length of your kayak should be determined by the kinds of waters you will be fishing. Shorter, 10- to 12-foot kayaks are great for inland lakes, ponds and slow-moving rivers. If you plan to fish in the ocean or larger bodies of water, you will want to consider a 12-foot or longer kayak. This extra length will help when battling any waves that you may encounter while you are out on the water.

Longer kayaks will be faster than shorter kayaks and will also add additional stability. Shorter kayaks will be more agile than the longer kayaks. So, if you are planning on taking a long trip, you will probably want a longer kayak with more speed. However, if you are fishing in a fast-paced river with obstacles, you might prefer a shorter kayak.

Consider the Kayak's Stability

When it comes to stability, there are a few things to look at. The wider a kayak is, the more stability you will have. The width will also provide more room in the kayak, making a long day on the water more comfortable. Also, the type of hull the kayak has will play a big role in how stable the kayak is. If stability is a high priority, look for a kayak that has a dual or tri hull. This helps displace water, adds stability, and it keeps you dry and inside the kayak.

Does the Kayak Have Built-in Rigging & Tackle Storage

Most modern fishing kayaks come with built-in storage, such as storage spaces with waterproof hatches, center consoles or front and rear deck spaces with gear-securing bungee cords. What to Choose - Sit in or Sit on Kayak

There are two types, sit-on-top kayaks and sit-in. Sit-in kayaks keep your legs enclosed. While they do offer storage space, it is sometimes harder to access while in this style of kayak. Sit-in kayaks also do not offer the ability to stand and fish.

What Will be the Kayak's Propulsion?

There are three ways to propel a kayak through the water – paddling, pedaling or using an electric trolling motor. The traditional paddle is the most common form of propulsion.

The second form, the pedal drive, allows you to move the kayak through the water using pedals almost like those you would find on a bicycle. These are connected to a propeller or fins beneath the boat. Paddling is very common, however, pedal kayaks are on the rise because they free up your hands for fishing.

The third form of propulsion involves using a battery-powered trolling motor, just like one you would find on almost any fishing boat. Like the pedal drive, the trolling-motor option keeps your hands free so you can spend more time fishing. They also offer greater boat control.

The paddle-propelled kayak is the most common and affordable type of fishing kayak. They come in sit-on and sit-in styles, in many different lengths and widths. From fishing small inland lakes to ocean fishing, there’s a model for almost any fishing application.

Pedal kayaks are for the anglers who want to invest more up front and free up their hands for fishing. Pedal kayaks will also allow you to handle wind and fish structure easier than a paddle kayak.

Choosing a Kayak Paddle

When it comes to kayak paddles, the same amount of thought and research that goes into finding the right kayak should also go into getting the right paddle. Generally, you will want a light paddle that you will be able to paddle with all day. You also want a strong paddle, as you might get into a situation where you will need to push off stumps or the ground to help you maneuver, and you don’t want that paddle to break.

The Kayak's Weight & Material

Paddles are almost always made of lightweight materials like aluminum, carbon or strong plastics. You will want to choose the lightest paddle you can, especially if you plan to spend long periods of time on the water. The lighter the paddle – carbon being the lightest and most durable – the more you'll reduce fatigue and make the day more enjoyable on the water.

Kayak Paddle Length

The paddle you choose for your fishing kayak should be different than the one you choose for a recreational kayak. Most fishing kayaks are wider than recreational boats. Also, the seat in a fishing kayak is usually up higher than a regular kayak, and this places you farther away from the water. Both of these dimensions, wider sides and a higher seat, require you to choose a longer paddle in order to comfortably reach the water. Getting the right length will make your day on the water much more enjoyable.

1. Steady Your Kayak With an Anchor Trolly

First, a kayak has a fragile connection to the water. The slightest breeze will move it, and something like reeling in a crankbait will turn the kayak toward the line of the retrieve.

Of course, it’s the ease of movement that makes a kayak so much fun to paddle, but it’s a pain when you’re trying to fish a specific area. There is a cure: a kayak anchor trolley.

The trolley is simple: it is a pulley mounted on each end of the kayak, along with some guides, trolley ring, and rope. The rope makes a continuous loop through the fore and aft pulleys and comes together in the trolley ring. The ring can move freely from pulley to pulley.

Thread the anchor rope through the ring and then adjust the ring’s position to lock the kayak in place. That way the boat and the wind or current come into equilibrium making casting and fishing a lot easier.

The neat thing is that the trolley can be used with a stakeout pole in shallow waters or a drift sock to slow the kayak’s drift in open water by adjusting the amount of line and the position of the trolley ring.

2. DIY Above Deck Kayak Tackle Storage is Much Easier

Another thing that makes any kayak, not just the 128T, a better fishing tool is tackle storage, and one of the easiest ways to get handy storage is to build a crate. While this boat has plenty of below deck storage, it is much easier to grab a box or bag from a container.

While tackle crates originally were made from purloined plastic milk crates, they became popular enough to be readily available from a variety of stores.

Building a DIY crate to fit your needs is relatively simple. One of the most used tackle storage additions to make is a set of PVC tubes to hold fishing rods—or you can buy a set of rod holders to bolt to the outside of the crate. By doing so on three sides (leaving the forward side without), you can store 9 or more rods rigged and ready for action.

(Note: the plastic fishing rod holders are available from Bass Pro Shops if you search ‘kayak crates.’ You’ll also find Plano versions.)

Another great addition is some holder for the anchor. If you use a folding anchor, then a large tube (PVC, plastic carton or whatever) lashed to one corner of the crate is a good fix.

Next comes tackle, and this perhaps, is what the crate system does best. It holds a series of plastic utility boxes for lures, terminal tackle, or whatever fits the fishing situation. Because the crate is open, all the boxes-- or bags-- are visible and easily reached.

And if you like, throw your lunch in on top.

The crate system does a great job of making tackle accessible—you just turn around and reach for the box you want. A crate fits well behind the seat of the Ascend 128T, and it’s easy to lash it to the deck with the installed D-rings and short sections of cord.

It’s worth noting that several tackle and accessory companies offer their versions of a crate, and Plano is one of them that most fishers recognize. It has two storage systems built for kayaks that are expansions of the crate theme. It’s also a good source for the plastic utility boxes.

3. Rod Holders Make Trolling for Fish Easy in a Kayak

Kayak fishers frequently spend a lot of time paddling between fishing spots, and it makes sense that the paddling time is spent looking for the best fishing. And dragging a lure behind the kayak—trolling-- is a great way to maximize fishing time.

However, the 128T isn’t set up to do that without a little help. Rod holders make trolling easy. Tracks for mounting rod holders and other accessories are standard on the Ascend 128T. They’re located on the top of the gunwales just forward of the seat.

Railblaza and the popular Scotty Baitcast / Spinning rod holder both make rod holders designed to use the tracks. You slide the metal widget—it’s a flat, weird-shaped nut—into the track and then twists the holder base to tighten the widget in place. The track allows you to place the rod holder where it’s handy for you.

4. A Must-Have Fish Finder

Finally, a fish finder sometimes called depth finder is one of the must-haves for fishing in lakes and reservoirs where it’s often necessary to know the depth of the water you’re fishing, not to mention the possibility of marking fish below the kayak. Fishing without one is like walking through the woods at night without a flashlight, as a friend described it.

While it’s possible and possibly desirable to use a tracking mount and a battery hooked up to the onboard Yak Power system to run a fish finder, I’ve found a better-for-me solution. It’s a depth finder designed for ice fishing.

The Humminbird Ice Helix 5 Chirp GPS Fish Finder is new, and for someone who fishes from more than one boat, as I do, it’s perfect. Ice-fishing depth finders are made to be pick-up-and-move portable because ice anglers frequently change holes looking to find fish. As a result, they’re self-contained with mount (stand), battery and charger, and transducer in a compact package

Because of the portability, it’s easy to move the Humminbird from kayak to kayak or from kayak to small boat. Also, as the Helix 7 Chirp is a top-line sonar, it will see duty in my big boat as well. The neat thing about this depth finder is that it comes with the cables and transducer for n open-water use as well as for ice fishing.

While it’s possible to use the ice-fishing transducer from a kayak, I’ve opted to add a Scotty Kayak/SUP track-mount transducer mount. The base slides into the same track that holds a rod holder, and the adjustable arm holds the transducer firmly in position over the side. And because of the range of adjustment, I can use the mount and arm in my small boat as well by merely adding a Scotty mounting track to the boat. This setup makes things incredibly simple.

There is a lot to be said for the Ascend 128T as a fishing machine beyond the above. One of the really slick points is the Yak Power system that is standard in this kayak. The system is a network of wires and ports that let the fisherman hook up all sorts of electrical accessories such as depth finders, video cameras, lights and such.

It’s also possible to add a stern-mounted trolling motor with the addition of a mount on the stern and the placement of a deep-cycle battery in the large below-deck spaces. Or you could add the small Power-Pole system.

The reality is that 128T is a great starting point for customization to make the best boat for an individual angler’s needs.

It might be tempting to think of kayaking or canoeing as a spring-summer-fall activity, but as long as the cold water you fish isn’t hard—that is covered with a sheet of ice—then cold weather fishing can be a great time for kayakers.

Think about it, there are fewer fishermen, no jet skis or wake boats, and the fish are still hungry.

But there’s a problem—winter fishing has its downside: it is cold (unless you live waaaaay down South), and it can be wet, and because of that cold-and-wet thing, it can be uncomfortable and a bit hazardous.

But still, kayaking in the winter is one of the best times to be on the water. With a little preparation and forethought, it can be as pleasant as a summer day.

Keeping Warm While Fishing Isn’t the Problem - Controlling it is

Sure, it’s easy to keep warm when it’s cold, right? You just pile on more clothes until the cold stays out. That’s fine if you’re watching hockey or golf, but since fishing out of a kayak requires muscle movement, keeping warm isn’t the problem. Controlling the warmth—so that you don’t get too warm or too cold—is the challenge.

It’s been said so much that it’s become a cliché: layering is the answer. And the right base layer clothing like Cabela's E.C.W.C.S Midweight base layers or thermal underwear are more important for a kayak fisherman than for others.

As you generate body heat from paddling or pedaling, you generate moisture. Pile on too many clothes, and you sweat, and that is not a good thing as it leads to chills when you stop working. And even if you’re not too warm, your body perspires constantly, and that moisture stays in your clothes—most of the time.

The ideal situation is for the clothing you wear to pass that moisture along to outer layers and eventually to the air. As much as I don’t like to say it, synthetic fibers do the best job of allowing the moisture to pass through. If you’re going to be active, then it’s imperative to shed your lucky tee shirt and go synthetic from the skin out.

Fortunately, synthetic-fiber base layers are as close as the nearest Bass Pro catalog or BassPro.com. There are different weights to tailor your choice to the temperature and your activity level. One piece of advice, you can get by with a heavier weight top than you might normally wear if it has a zip that lets you vent excess heat and moisture. If it turns cool, zip it back up and save the heat.

While I’ve been beating the plastic drum about synthetics and your body core, I’ll say that when you’re talking the upper reaches, it’s hard to beat wool for warmth. And buffalo wool is even better.

But here’s a thought—keeping warm is more than wearing a wool or synthetic hat. We’ve all heard that “10 percent” of our body heat can be lost through our head. While that may be true, especially for those of us who are follically challenged, the neck area is just as important.

Buff makes a merino wool gaiter that snugly fits around head this great heat-loss area and does a good job of keeping you warm. But any kind of covering for the neck is good, especially if it is form fitting. Keep Moisture Out of Your Clothing While on the Water

Fishing out of a kayak can be a wet sport, which can be a problem in cold weather. Just as we want to move body moisture out of our clothing, we definitely want to keep exterior moisture out as well. However, kayaks have the potential to be wet—from launch to landing. That’s especially true with sit-on kayaks where you are open to the weather and any incidental splashing.

A sit-in kayak has the potential to keep your lower regions warmer and drier. Buy a paddle or spray skirt that closes the cockpit in a sit-in, and you will be covered from the waist down.

But for those who fish out of a sit-on-top kayak, breathable, waterproof outerwear is the key to staying dry and warm.

While a waterproof coat is not necessary until it starts raining or snowing, pants or bibs like the are a good solution for most of the wet stuff that comes in over the side from wave splash, drippy paddles, flopping fish and so on.

A lightweight set of bibs are all that is required until temperatures start to drop, then something like Bass Pro Shops 100mph Gore-Tex rain bibs are dry and warm because of the lining.

While we can guard against rain and splashes, perhaps the greatest potential for getting wet is at the launch. Most of my kayaking is done in spots that are best called “primitive”, and that means that I usually have to wade to get the kayak in water deep enough to float when I board.

In sandal season, that’s not an issue, but come cold weather, that means boots. There is another option, however, and it’s one I like better.

It may sound strange, but the best option I’ve found is breathable, stocking-foot waders like the Cabela's Premium Zip Breathable Stocking-Foot Fishing Waders or Caddis Deluxe Breathable Stocking-Foot Waders. I use them in place of rain pants/bibs and boots. As the waders are designed to keep water out, they’re perfect. And while you could wear boots with them, a pair of inexpensive sandals keeps the gravel from causing any problems while walking from the truck to the kayak.

Fishing in Winter is More Hazardous Consider These Safety Points

Because of the cold temperatures, cold water and the slight chance of hypothermia, fishing in winter is more hazardous than sitting in a recliner and watching football. But not much...

For those who go the wader route—it’s a good idea to wear a belt, not to keep the waders up in the belt-and-suspenders scenario but as a safety measure. In the unlikely event of capsizing and being dumped, the belt will keep water from filling the waders.

Float coats or a parka offer insulation for warmth, alow for mobility and breathability with buoyancy; however, not all are not USCG approved. Check out the USCG approved Mustang Survival float coats and parkas.

Another safety point concerns PFD or Life Jacket use. Inflatable PFDs do not work as well when temperatures drop below 40 degrees. According to manufacturers’ recommendations, the inflatable PFD should be partially inflated (orally) to allow for the slower-than-normal C02 inflation rate caused by cooler temperatures. Foam-filled life jackets that are U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) approved can be used. Inflatable PDFs provide no protection from hypothermia.

CAUTION: As the air temperature decreases, so does the C02 pressure in an automaticlly inflatable PDF. Less C02 pressure means less buoyancy. Be sure to read the U.S. Coast Guard label before heading out on a day below 40 degrees.

On the plus side, foam life jackets are warmer, which is a good thing when it’s cold. There are several designs that target kayak users, making them more comfortable than the usual run of foam live vests.

One last point—it’s a good idea to keep a change of warm clothes in the truck for that time when you do get wet.

While there are risks, certainly, they are few and limited. Winter still is one of the best times to launch and spend time on the water—even if you have to dress for it.
